Forget all the noise and day to day events (the lockdowns, the messaging, the shortages of PPE, the schools/exam issues, the trip to Barnard Castle etc etc) the two most important measures of any Government's performance over this year is the number of deaths and following on from this the severity of the economic hit.
To some extent these two factors might be thought to be negatively correlated - a Government could focus on dealing with one well at the expense of the other.
Johnson's Government has performed very badly on both measures when you look at other similar countries. The number of deaths is the highest in Europe (and 3rd as % of population) and the % reduction in GDP is the highest in Europe.
People are not being too harsh on Johnson, they are not being anything like harsh enough.
