Payero

When he first arrived I'm not convinced we actually went the extra mile to help him settle either. You had footage of him doing one to one training with Blackwell (bet that was a laugh) and Warnock apparently using Google translate to communicate with him. I don't understand why, as a multi million pound business, you wouldn't put a lot of effort into making overseas players, particularly if they're multi million pound assets, feel as welcome as possible. Well in fact any player really, but players from further afield usually need more support.

You would hope under the new manager we're a bit more professional on that front now (as we seem to be in most areas).

Like Warnock I do get the impression Wilder isn't a huge fan of using foreign players, but would expect him to be more pragmatic about it. If he's as ambitious as seems to be he's going to have to deal with it more and more the higher a level he gets to manage at.

It's one of them isn't it. If I was a young player moving abroad I'd look to be pressing on with picking up the language and have some sort of personal assistant who could bridge the gap. £14k a week? You'd want to hit the ground running, you can't just let things happen to you. Create the best possible environment for you to flourish.

The line about wanting to stay in Europe, I wonder if he is to move out on loan whether he'll look to La Liga? Newly promoted Girona perhaps? Stuani captain with two Argentina loanees from Man City..

Maybe recently relegated Alaves who again did have two Argentinian players in on loan last season. Gonzalo Escalante (on loan from Lazio) would compliment his style of play.

I wonder what the Spanish is for 'are you with me?'

Excellent point about support to settle in, a massive culture shock for the lad, especially early doors when he had a limited personal network of family/friends. I would like to think Leo helped but it seems like that's been more on the pitch rather than off it. I've only really seen him passing on instructions during games (that home game where Payero started in DM but was subsequently moved further forward springs to mind).

We might be off beam and the club might have done lots behind the scenes to help him settle (including Leo taking him under his wing off the field) but from afar it doesn't really look like it. Perhaps a question for Rob to ask at a future press conference (it's still relevant if he stays or goes really - what are the club doing or what more could the club have done etc).

Having just seen Newy's point above I would agree some sort of personal assistant/friend on the pay roll to help with the language, culture and general integration would be essential. Although not sure we have had great success in this area in the past. I'm sure I remember when Juninho first joined us, the club appointed translator wasn't passing on messages correctly and a Brazilian family who met him at the airport when he arrived ended up helping out.

Yeah exactly. Whether it was by accident or design felt like we're better at this sort of thing in the Robson years. But there's obviously an onus on the player too.

Lot of time on your hands (particularly if you're injured), plenty of disposable income. You don't get many better chances to learn a foreign language I'd have thought.

You'd also want to reach out and connect with other Spanish speakers in the area too surely? From the sounds of it he spent a lot of rattling around the house on his own till his Mrs came over.

I'm sure Leo is a blast but maybe not who a 22 year old wants to socialise all the time with. However, Newcastle and Leeds have a number of Spanish speakers, get him a house at Wynyard, get him Almiron's number and you're off!

That does sound like us to be fair 😂. Probably didn't even speak Portuguese. At they tried though.

Alternatively he could just take the Ravanelli approach and travel everywhere with his entourage in tow.

We are STILL missing George Friend. Captain, left sided centre back.. can still power forward and speaks Spanish!

I wonder if there are any bilingual players out there, out of contract that could do a two birds with one stone situation for us?

A bit like George Friend.. Argentinan, Uruguayan, Spanish, Mexican. Someone who can do a job for us and still put their arm round Payero.

A Spanish Sol Bamba! A Peruvian Peltier?

Remember when Massimo Maccarone signed I used to see him in that Italian restaurant on Linthorpe Road that Festa had a share in. He was always sat in the corner on his own looking as sick as a chip apart from when the Italian waiters spoke to him. Don't think he could speak English when he signed.

A couple of other times he was there with Abel Xavier.

Dunno If anyone has a link to the club / can get a message to Martin...

In 2014 I walked West to East across South America to the World Cup for charity (was on BBC Radio Tees / Look North etc etc) not sure anyone remembers.. We went viral because a dog followed us!? Walked 2000km from Mendoza - Porto Alegre.

Anyway... very very randomly we had to can our original route due to sketchy Argentinian motorways and Chilean truck drivers swerving into the hard shoulder. We went a little further North and crossed the entire Cordoba/Rosario province using an old smaller road 'Ruta 11' Our entire project was based around football and meeting locals /playing each town and village we passed through with the local kids/teenagers. Through ridiculous coincidence we actually stayed in the village Payero is from , a very small farming community called Pascanas. This was 2014 so he would have been 15/16 I'm guessing.. there's a very strong chance we played a game with him in the local Polideportivo.

I would love to reach out to Payero but I don't have twitter or anything so not a sausage how to do it...?!

I'm a local lad / Season ticket holder - Speak Spanish to a Half decent level and it would be incredible to find out if we played football with him.. although I'm guessing realistically he was probs already in BA on the academy of Banfield by then!.. Just such a coincidence that a lad from a tiny farming town I've stayed in on the other side of the world came to Boro.. It's a great story :)

Cheers Peeps UTB!!

A Venezuelan Vossen? A Paraguayan Paul Okon?

Julio Arca would be my go to guy, see if he was up for a personal coaching role. Argentinian, knows the langue still fairly local and knows the club 6/7 seasons.. 3 of which in the premier league. I bet his touch still hasn't left him. I'd be slipping into his DMs before I'd stepped of the plane!

Martin Payero came back to Pascanas when he was 16 in 2014 to play for "Atletico Pascanas" (they wore blue and white). Playing alongside his older brother Ezequiel Payero.
He didn't join Banfield until 2015.

Incredible.. then it makes it even more likely then :)

Not sure, but probably go via the club maybe? Sure they'd be interested and put you in touch. Drop Rob a message for the best way to do it would be my suggestion?
