Payero to Udinese

He played really well at Boca last season so I'd be surprised if we accept anything less than our money back for him. If it was going to be a nominal fee, we'd have sent him back to Boca on loan and let his contract run out.

It'll be announced as an undesclosed fee anyway though. So we'll probably never know.
It will be a nominal or a free. We won't getting more than the agreed fee with boca. Otherwise they would have bought him then sold him on at a profit to udinese.

The agreed fee with Boca was £5 million, which they tried to renegotiate. I don't think we'll get more than that. But we won't be letting him go for a nominal fee, otherwise we would have just sent him back on loan to Boca till his contract expired. He was playing in their first team whenever he wasn't injured this season so they'd have likely been more than happy to bring him back on loan till the end of the season and then sign him on a free.

Of course we wouldnt just send him back to Boca. Whatever they offered must have been an insult and the club where confident that he could be sold for more. It wouldnt surprise me if BOCA wanted him on a free hoping that we'd just be happy to get him off the wage bill. I very much doubt we've got near to the £3m (if correct what we paid for him) but he's gone now and off the books, another failed experiment ala De Pena, Marinelli, Dong Gook etc

Probably about 1.5m plus add ons, which is more than most of thought, as it looked like he would probably go back out on loan and see his contract out.

According to Italian sources (translated), this is one of three deals they're pursuing with the money from the Beto sale. So I think it'll be higher than the fees many think. But anywhere from £1.5 million with add ons and a sell on clause upwards would be a great deal for us.

Udinese fans on Twitter (again translated) are claiming 2 million euros. I think that's a good deal, all things considered.

We're all calling for the Brentford model, but part of that model is knowing when to cut your losses on a player and get the most back that you can. They had plenty of flops that came in for two years then were sold at a loss too. It comes with the territory of signing players with potential but not proven, some will fail.

Don't get the criticism of the clubs taking punts on younger players who are cheaper who in hindsight can't cut the mustard

If it was as easy as every single player you sign for a few million turns out good we'd have spent the last ten years in the premiership

We have tried to spend 7, 8 , 15 million on players at this level and nearly all failed, flint, saville, fletcher, assombalonga etc

I think the south american market is a very difficult one for us due to complete different styes of play and more risk, de pena and now
Payero recently, think that might put us off for a while in that region

De Pena was ages ago and was a result of Leo's recommendation, so i'm not sure it's relevant. It's case by case, wherever they're from.

Ref South Americans 2015 to date

We made money on Ramirez and Stuani in recent years. Stuani was around £2.2m for a Uruguay international striker aged 28. Nearly £10m profit on Ramirez alone which would have bought De la Pena and Payero plus at least £4m in change. Swings and roundabouts.

Very different situation though because those players were South American but we didn't sign them from South America. They had experience of playing in Europe, and at a higher level than we were playing.

Have we had any player signed from South America with no experience of Europe been a success other than Juninho?

They were both established players. We have been trying to find a hidden gem from South America since the days of Robson. None have worked. It's a nice idea. But it's an idea that has occurred to Barca, Man City, PSG.

Jaime Moreno came from la Paz for fc blooming

Robbo nearly cost us promotion persevering with him, he was an utter donkey for those first 6 months as every time he played he missed sitter after sitter and wed get done over on the counter, then for some reason something clicked and he was far better in the premier league.
