Patrick Bamford

Monk was more or less handed it on a plate looking back. What was key to our success in the Championship under Karanka was having that solid spine......Ayala/Gibson.....Clayton/Leadbitter. In Ayala and Gibson we had arguably the best CB pairing in the division, and in Clayton and Leadbitter we had arguably the best midfield pairing in the division. All Monk had to do was stick with that spine and build his team around it. He already had the makings of a great side if he'd have gone with Friend at left-back, Traore wide right and Bamford up front, then he just needed to spend the money on a GK, RB, no10 and maybe another winger.

Instead, he completely dismantled the team which had previously taken us up, and wasted the majority of the transfer budget on 3 strikers when we already had Bamford.

I think some fans and Gibson have to take some responsibility for us not doing that. Lots of moaning about our style of football and Gibson seemed to want to change it because of that. Along comes Monk and he probably promised and was given a remit of not just getting us up, but doing it in style. Oops.

I think this a fair assumption to make. It’s also relevant when things going really wrong the go wrong in various errors. It isn’t one mistake but many mistakes making a catastrophe

That's a fair point. It probably explains why he chose to set up 4-3-3 with 3 strikers, but of course he gave up on that system early into the season.

I think so. He clearly had a plan (regardless of its merits) and generally recruited players for it. He gave up on it quickly but we didn't really have the players to play any other way. Obviously resulting in a ridiculously unbalanced squad that were still suffering from to an extent.

I think his plan was obviously to go with Britt, Bamford and Braithwaite as the front 3. I remember he tried it in the pre-season game vs Ausburg and you could see the potential to be fair. Some of the interplay between the 3 of them was brilliant to watch. Braithwaite got injured though after the first game and it's probably a big reason why he didn't want to persist with that set-up.

Didn't he make the pitch narrower too? Then had full backs bombing on and Clayton dropping in almost as a third centre back. All quite forward thinking in theory. Shame it was a total disaster!

Yeah, Clayton would drop deep in between the two centre-backs and Christie and Friend were clearly being asked to bomb forward, so it was essentially 3-4-3 in possession and 4-3-3 out of possession.

To be honest I think Monk would have been better off just sticking with that set-up. Gestede came in for Braithwaite and we got off to a decent enough start, but we lost away at Forest and he decided to completely change it up in the next game vs Preston. From there on in he pretty much made it up as he went along.

If only we had beat Norwich in the playoff final. It's a case of 'what may have been'.

He would definitely come into that squad in the prem either on loan or even a perm. I get why he chose not to come back and give the prem a crack. He basically 'wasted' a couple of years with guff loans.

He looked almost instantly happier once we brought him back. I am sure he was a very high earner but that holds no weight when you see what we've paid others.

😄 Yeah always been a bamford fan not that I make posts on him all the time . Don’t think I’ve seen another Middlesbrough123 mind

It's all relitive at the time. He was our best forward and that only compounds the madness of bringing in Fletcher / Britt and Braithwaite when we already had big earners in Rudy and Bamford.

It's almost laughable that we had 5 forwards who cost a fortune on massive wages. We currently have one fit forward and Warnock can't bring in one on a free🙄

I guess 7-10mil wasn't bad at the time. Yet we have spent that money 3 fold and not improved or more importantly found a regular goal scorer. Let's be fair our record with CFs is fecking woeful.

So the money was good but its been sp*nked. I always say the same about Adam Reach. Yes 5mil was a great price but we blew that money and so much more on players who wouldn't be any better in the champo.

Will be interesting to see if he gets near the England squad. He’s had a great start to the season and two of his goals on Friday were superb. The other was a real poachers goal. He needs to be more consistent but I’m quite pleased for him, even if he is doing it for Leeds. He always came across as a nice lad. I think he might go for Ireland if he doesn’t get a look in for England this season.

Can you imagine keeping him instead of signing Braithwaite.
Probably pointless focusing on what might of been . This could be the year out midfield steps up .

I didn't, but after 1000+ games watching the Boro , I would not argue with you on my knowledge of football.

One hattrick and suddenly he is Messi.

Oops never linked it to JM post

I agree, 1 in 2 starts over his career is not as good as Messi. But better than anyone in our team.

According to some not good enough because Dyche didn't pick him etc.

We also apparently needed to sell him so we could buy erm.... George Saville?

I wonder if some still think Pulis "worked miracles". Absolutely F***ing fraud who, aside from putting us through one of the most boring seasons in memory, probably did more damage than good despite Gibson thinking the sun shone out of his ****.

The money we've squandered on strikers and that conman goes and flogs off the only decent one (which was blindingly obvious to anyone who believes football should be primarily played on grass, not in the air) because he has the nerve to suggest he should be playing up front instead of the human/donkey hybrid Gestede. To Leeds of all clubs too.

Still fuming.
Still fuming. I must admit you’re hiding it well 😂 but you’re not the only one
