Karanka couldn't spend the money allocated to monk as the vast majority of not all was raised by selling De roon and the rest of the premier League flops.
Britt is a 15 goal a season Championship striker, consistently. That's what we signed and that's what he still is. The fact that it costs £15m for that nowadays isn't his fault. If we were to sell him tomorrow I reckon we'd get about £10m back, with the shortfall accounted for by the fact that he's 3 years older and hasn't improved at all while we've had him. (And he only has 1 year left on his deal).I think Britt is being judged, by some, today on a transfer that looked good at the time.
He had a great track record of scoring goals and we went and bought him.
I can’t recall, but I don’t think there were many having a go at that decision then - pretty sure it generated a fair bit of excitement.

I certainly think we'd be asking for £10m. We'd maybe get a bit less but nowhere near as low as £4m.We wouldn’t get £10m for him, for the reason you’ve given yourself at the end.
Clubs amortise their players’ values on a straight line from their full transfer fee at the point of buying to zero at the end of their contract. With one year left of a four-year deal, that makes Britt worth £3.75m currently.
Obviously, we might get a better price for him than that but, as you say yourself, he’s older and hasn’t improved, so it wouldn’t be anywhere near £10m.
And I’m a fan of Britt by the way. As far as I can see, we bought a proven goal scorer and then refused to play to his strengths.
Judging by the fist we made of it in 2016/17 I'm not entirely convinced about that.Think you could be right there, I think if karanka stayed we would be a premier League side now.

BTW, I will caveat this by saying in a non-covid19 world where the market hasn't been flipped on his head (as it now will be).
Yeah £12m is probably way off. That’s obviously his book value, which is not necessarily the same as a transfer value. I’d be surprised if we could get nearly three times it though.
It's amazing how dumb some of our transfers have been. When you think of how we got mendieta on a free and viduka for 4 million. Even Ramirez on a loan. When we've got cash it's like we jettison all sense of value out the window and stop trying to get crafty deals that take advantage of a clubs need to sell. Should we buy player a) a bog standard championship midfielder in the first year of his four year contract from a team that prizes him highly and has no need to sell who has had one good season or b) a bog standard championship midfielder that will cost half a million because he's in the last year of his contract and is pushing 30.
I still don't get why people defend Pulis so much, yes, Monk came in and spunked cash, but Pulis started off so well with Monks players, we played decent football mostly. Then he dismantled all that (yes I know we needed to sell too) and played the most depressing style of football I've ever seen.

Pulis did well first year as he had a phenomenal player that he got the best out of. Second year he lost a lot of our good players and played in a way that had worked for him before. It didn't work this time for one reason alone. We didn't score any set pieces. I think we got three or four. Usually a third of his goals come this way. We can see that he didn't do appallingly due to the team fighting relegation this year.

His football was dreadful, we would except it if we got results but generally we didn't.
