P&O Ferries suspends all services

What does 'like' mean. I worked in Spain for 12 years and Germany ( only for a few weeks) they are identical to the UK in their outlook, the others I have no experience in. But I cannot see any real evidence they are different.

I had this battle yesterday. What is the alternative to neo liberalism apart from rationing? You cannot stop people wanting to buy things.

I am all for state intervention, utilities and transport should never have been privatised. What I don't know is how you get that cat back in the bag.
Would that be France where they have to pay you full money for 2 years gradually reducing?

WhoTF are these? Since when do Mickey Mouse companies like these have the powers of arrest…….especially for a workforce half of whom are women!

Sorry saying photo‘s too big but it’s someone called ‘Interforce’ and it’s apparently the letter they sent to staff.

it is unbelievable that a company can sack on mass a load of UK workers and emply agency workers instead!
Is it? It's been happening for years with call centres etc

I lost my job in 2012 as it went to Philippines

Businesses will do what they legally can to cut costs

Apparently the staff who were sacked had their contracts paid up, and more.

With regard to restructuring the company, DP World could create a new company to assume the assets of the old company. That's easy enough to do but the newco would have apply for all the licenses and certifications that you need to run a ferry. That will be fairly complex with new seafarers I think.
Dubai don't have a great record with the treatment of Seafarers.

I did a bit of work for a charity over there years ago who were helping some Indians who somehow had found themselves stranded for 2 years or more offshore. Authorities in Dxb weren't too helpful

In that case the company must have somehow voided the employment contracts or paid the notice period.

If they have liquidated and started a new company (with the same shareholder beneficiaries) on the same day that that might do it. Not sure how viable that is though. Anyone know company law?
Alot don’t operate under a British flag generally they will sail under the flag of a tinpot country with zero employee protections it’s how a lot of them get away with having philippino crew on about $50 dollars a week.

As someone who has worked with ships crews over the last 25 years Philippino crew are far to expensive they have been largely replaced by Russian crew who work for a absolute pittance

The P and O ferries went foreign flag a few years ago. I'm surprised they waited until now to start using cheaper crew.
