Octopus Tracker scam-pyramid scheme?

My heads all over with this stuff. Coming to the end of a 5 Yr fixed deal with Shell (14 days to go ) that has been great for us. Shell had a 1 Yr deal fixed but I dithered for about 12 hrs about what to do and it was withdrawn.
Now Shell say I can go on flexi 12 which will work out at £123 a month on last year's usage. EDF have offered a 3 Yr fixed which works out at £131 a month. Or there's Octopus and the chance to go on the tracker.
It's really got me wound up even though there's not that much between them. I think it's because I made such a good decision prior for 5 yrs and will be a little fed up if the 3 Yr fix turns out to be a bad move 🤪🤪

You see, those quotes are probably what a lot of people are paying approx on average, probably a bit lower. But some on the tracker are saying they were paying £300 plus. That was likely way too high.

The other thing is if you start timing when you use energy, it's going to save money but it's not going to be convenient for all. It also becomes psychological where you start thinking if and when you should use energy. Some will prefer paying an amount they are happy with and forgetting about it.

You’re making no sense.

Monthly direct debit quotes are meaningless. People pay for the energy they use.

If tracker rates are lower than variable rates, there is no way someone can lose out by being on tracker. Someone on tracker can’t currently be paying too much.

If prices surge, people can leave tracker at no cost.

Monthly dd quotes are not meaningless they are based on current prices and based on my use each year for the last 5 years. This will help in making my decision. They only become meaningless if I suddenly start using more energy for some reason or prices change.

whilst the op makes some reasonable observations, particularly about insulation, I don't see the need for the personal digs and the implied nastiness. the referral scheme can be used by anyone, for anyone, family or otherwise. the tracker is not for everyone, but good for those that are interested enough to watch the rates, and can be a bit "flexible" with their energy use, which I see as a good thing - for too long people have not thought about their consumption, and taken it for granted. a nasty thread, that could have been an interesting addition to the existing octopus thread.

I’m on the octopus agile. Definitely has benefits and if you plan your big usage on things like washing to avoid 4-7pm you’ll save money.

I’ve also go solar and a battery system. I sometimes get paid to take power and octopus offered a much better purchase of surplus than EDF.

I wouldn’t say it’s a scam but everyone has different usage and approaches so it’s not a one size fits all system.

I recently joined in late aug, I asked to be moved from their standard to tracker tariff in 1st Sep after a week being with them which took them nearly a month to do but they did back date my bill to the 1st. As it went over my first billed month I got my original bill which was £188 but then received a second bill a couple of days later which recalculated 3/4 of it at the tracker rate and came in at £137 so I’m looking at around a 30-40% saving for a normal month off what would have been a typical rate when extrapolating that correction for a full month.

Thumbs up from me.

I meant in terms of comparisons between households.

It’s impossible at present to be paying more on the tracker than variable for the same energy use.

They are meaningless until you've checked it. Even if they have data they are all doing future projections on estimates on the thin basis " oh we think you'll use more energy than before " So it is meaningless as every provider want more money from you than they actually need and they are quite prepared to waste your time in finding that out and quite prepared to try to back up their reasoning.

You need better taste.
Yup, he's just a saddo.

Even if it was satire, it's dangerous on the internet as loads of idiots might believe it which will end up costing them money, maybe costing them even more than that. Loads of people have no association with posts or posters, so won't get context etc.

The only reason I reply to him is to help anyone not clued up, who reads his sad posts.

Don’t you mean costing the fragrance guy money 😂
He's probably made a killing, doesn't make him wrong, no need to be jelous. He's clearly earned it too, and way more clued up than most, far play to him. The one who is referred get's £50 too, don't forget that.

I suppose I'm pro the trackers just as much as him, and I even use a slightly different tarriff for elec (agile), ultimately they both beat paying the cap or a fixed rate, by a mile. I've saved about a grand in 6 months and not given a referral out to anyone.

I just hope Rob is getting a cut for the advertising 😎
You appear to have a problem with TFG, with all your snidey, hiding behind a username on a message board, digs

Any particular reason - and if you have, at least have the balls to be open about it
