Octopus Tracker scam-pyramid scheme?

Got no skin in the game on this one gents - but I've spoken to quite a few people about it. Some of said their bills have gone up since they switched. So thought I'd tell expo to give his tuppence.

This tracker probably works for some, but it also seems there's a false economy going on. A common theme amongst Octopussies seems to be to spend on gas when it's priced low and don't spend when it's priced high. This is obviously where any saving is coming from. But the big problem with this is the price is dictating the use. Usage should depend on when you need it - not the price. That's the big problem they've got, gents. It's not going to be suitable for many people.

We've got our house fully insulated with a couple of 🪵burners in (free wood). We had solar panels put in a while back and I've just put my own heat pump in - it's a fantastic system. These heat pumps punch weigh above their weight compared to anything else. It's effectlevley good old technology. If it isn't broke don't try to fix it. That's where they're going wrong with a lot of this new technology. They're trying to solve problems that aren't there and get you to pay for it.

Just to note, insulation is massive and of key importance. If you're not insulated you're always playing catch up. If anyone is doing a house refurbishment - get it all back to the brick and insulate it. Or if you're moving - look for a house you can potentially insulate or has evidence of already been done. Go for that over the granite worktops, etc.

My bills, once joining the tracker, are more akin to what I paid before this energy crisis. So I’d would say, not true in the slightest
I've been on the tracker since February. I don't think gas nor electricity has been more expensive than the standard price cap tariff I was already on with octopus since I joined. It has literally saved me £100s - maybe even the best part of £1k. Nor has it changed my habits. I have an EV and joke about plugging it in on cheap days but in reality I just plug it in when it needs charging.

You’ve got an EV?? They’re rubbish though aren’t they?

In for a penny…..

They’re almost as bad as air fryers…..

I have saved about £250 over the last quarter using this service compared with shell energy. It may be more expensive over winter, I'll feed back next April.

Obviously if you have a made up house it's going to be cheap to pretend to heat it but I don't see why there's a problem with letting people know about an alternative, cheaper service. If it didn't have the referral tied to it would that make it ok?

It's always good to question these things, especially if people have a vested interest in getting people signed up. There's always a debate to be had and obviously people can make their own decisions.

One thing to note, some of those who switched to the tracker were previously seemingly paying really high bills. Perhaps they were overpaying and now are getting a rate that is much more reasonable.

With regards to pyramid schemes, I'm no expert and it's something I would advise staying away from. But the term was used loosely.

One thing I would exercise caution with is adopting a "loser's mentality" to an energy tariff. If any money has been saved, you're not playing the energy company's money moving forward - you're playing with your own. Decisions should be driven by judgement using up to date evidence, not what might have happened in the past.
