Now they're out of Europe, how can anyone stop Man City from winning the league?

It’s boring them dominating the league every year

It's boring them winning the league every year, and I really hope they slip up this time, but they've not dominated it in the last 3 seasons.

They only won it by 1 point in 2021-22, and lost more matches than Liverpool, though together they definitely dominated the league.

Arsenal were top for the vast majority of last season and bottled it.

This season, it's been neck and neck between 3 teams for the majority of it.

It's only a shock loss from Liverpool that has put Man City in the driving seat, they've actually got a fairly poor record against the top 6 clubs this season.

Loss and a draw to Arsenal.
Two draws with Liverpool.
Draw with Tottenham.
Defeat and a win against Villa.
It's only Newcastle they've beaten twice.

Chelsea could still be in the top 6 if their form continues, and City drew against them twice.

To be fair this is Arsenal's first season in the Champions League for 7 years and Liverpool didn't qualify last year finishing 22 points off the pace in 5th.

Newcastle were in the CL this season along with Man Utd, Spurs last season along with Chelsea and hopefully Villa will be in next season. Leicester should have qualified in 2020 and 2021 but bottled it at the death, whilst West Ham were only 2 points off qualifying in 2021.

If Villa finish 4th, that would be 8 different English teams to play in the CL over 4 seasons as well as Leicester and West Ham going into the last day of the season with a chance of qualification. That would suggest it's not quite the closed shop you might think it is.
Fair enough.

Just did a Google and one site has the records up to 2022 whereby there has been 100 English qualifiers for the CL over the years.

87% of those included only Man U (25), Arsenal (19), Liverpool (14), Chelsea (18) and Man City (11).

There are 6 other teams that have qualified in the 30 years these records cover.

I guess that’s why I get the perception, rightly or wrongly.

It would be a decent quiz question to find the other 13

5 of the other 6 teams from top of my head:

Spurs
Everton
Leicester
Blackburn
Newcastle

Can't think of the 6th.
Would Blackburn have played in the Champions League? They won the league while it was still the European Cup didn't they?

I think it started the same time as the premier League in 92/93.
Actually - that would mean Leeds maybe are the 6th team from their title win in 91/92.

You are correct. 92/93 was the first Champions League season and Leeds played in it

Not a given City will win but they are favourites. Arsenal and Liverpool need to get their form back and start winning straightaway to put the pressure back on city. They will be gutted after last night's result and could well lose to Chelsea in the cup on Saturday which might be another blow for them.

Yeah, I feel like people just see City's name at the end of the season as champions and then going forward just forget what the seasons were actually like. Cause they've only had like 2 seasons where they've "dominated" it and won it comfortably. They won two by a single point on the final day of the season, won last season after being second for most of it and Arsenal throwing it away, and if they go on to win it this season they've been second and third for most of it.

I find it hard to care about them winning really, partly because I have no skin in the game and don't really care who wins the Premier League as a Boro fan unless it's a one off Leicester situation, but otherwise, all I'm seeing now is what Man Utd did when I was a kid, so there's no difference to me just seeing a different team winning it loads.

Good quizzing. You got all 6.

Leeds have also been in it during the O’Leary years and got to SF.

Is this slightly skewed stats? For instance the champions league was only for champions, then has gradually increase to top 4, and now possibly 5. Teams like Villa, Norwich would have qualified before in current format

They are what they are I guess. CL qualifiers.

Maybe in the early 90’s there would have been more clubs on the list had the format been top 4 but my comment about it being a a closed shop was more about the current climate rather than 30 years ago.

I just gave these stats to give some basis for why I might feel that, from a quick Google.

It kind of proves his point though doesn't it.

Let's take the first 10 years of the Premier League. From 92/93 -> 01/02. 11 Different teams featured in the top 4.

Man Utd
Villa
Norwich
Blackburn
Newcastle
Arsenal
Liverpool
Nottingham Forest
Aston Villa
Chelsea
Leeds

In the last 10 years. From 13/14 -> 22/23. 8 Different teams featured in the top 4. 2 of them only featured once.

Man City
Chelsea
Liverpool
Arsenal
Man United
Tottenham
Leicester
Newcastle

Breaking into that top 4 and sustaining any sort of competitiveness has become almost impossible.

Would not have known they were out of Europe had I not seen this thread. Don't bother with European football.

Is it too late to say ..................good.
