No new striker

Which was my worry stuck in a chain with villa taking the **** leaving us in limbo.
Why are they taking the p*ss though? It’s late in the window but Boro sign players at the death as well. I think, would certainly hope, that there was a contingency plan in place to cover someone leaving the club but if there isn’t and we’re left short then that’s on us, not Villa.

It is if villa string out the transfer till the 11th hour with the money.

It wouldn’t be the first time either we’ve been in this position.

Remember the spence to spurs fiasco.

We've known for a couple of weeks that Villa wanted Rogers. The club will have had a contingency in place whether to replace him now, or in the future, or if we can use the funds and place in the squad elsewhere.

In my opinion, we really do need a new striker. Unless we are going to play Forss as a number 9, then we need reinforcements.

I think it's a thin chance of the playoffs with a new striker.

And there's not much point being in the playoffs unless you win them, which is a very thin chance, even if we blow all the Rogers money today.

Apart from TV money and experience for some of our younger players.

I'd fancy us against anyone (with a fully fit squad) over two legs, and then in a one off game at Wembley.

Fortunately, Carrick and co will be thinking the same and not throwing in the towel just yet.

Wonder if selling Rogers means we keep Hackney and jones in the summer even if we don’t go up? If so I think it’s good business, next season with this team and those two particularly flying I think we’ll be much stronger. Also not ruling out having a good go this season

But they are not though we’ve seen that in games already.

I’m not sure the stats reflect the quality. We had a dreadful start and since then we have picked up and started scoring. Get the lads back and a good run in the side and hopefully they will come good.

Promotion this season is not a necessity or a right. If we fall short we go again. Hopefully without the dreadful start that we have ‘enjoyed’ for the last two seasons.

I think it's a fair point. We know, in all likelihood, we have to sell a player each season to balance the books. I do see this as giving us an advantage in the Summer. It's hard to predict what the individual player might do though. If they start agitating, I don't see any point keeping them against their will.

I really don't see Hackney doing that; Jones as a slightly older player with no roots in the area may.

It's got to be part of the equation. In fact the whole thing is probably quite complex. It's certainly not as straightforward as selling someone for x means you now have that amount Sat in the bank to spend. It's not football manager.

Someone explained it really well the other day how the Rogers deal is really good for FFP given he's only been here 6 months. Gives us more headroom. Which hopefully means he counts as our big "sale" for this summer and allows us to keep other key players (although granted everyone has a price).

We are outsiders to actually get into the playoffs (though personally I think we have a fighting chance). We certainly wouldn’t be favourites even if we got there. We’re not as strong as Leeds or Soton and at least one of those will be in the playoffs. We would probably have to beat them over 2 legs if we got there.

So we definitely shouldn’t be blowing all the Rogers money just to have a crack this year. If we do sign a striker it should be long term with a promotion push next season in mind. Which is 100% what I’m sure we’ll do.

Who is giving up?

I favour patient building over "must win now". The must win now mentality has held us back in recent seasons. I think you're just looking at too small a picture.

Besides, as fans have repeatedly said this season, it's fun going under Carrick now. I enjoy watching us play again.

We would be comfortably in the play offs with a better defensive record, points tossed away at Bristol City and Plymouth for example and at home to Hull, Rotherham and Huddersfield. I wouldn't mind us giving Kavanagh a run if Coburn and Lathe aren't fit, then re-assess in the summer.

Exactly. Ever since our last foray into the PL (and really since relegation in 2009 under Southgate) we have tried short term quick fixes. Strachan and buy a Scottish squad. Karanka and half Spanish squad, then Monk and waste money like it's going out of fashion. Etc. Attempting to get promoted or (in the case of Karanka) to stay in the PL. Just now we seem to have a plan for the medium to long term to build a sustainable model playing football that is entertaining to watch.

Being astute is not "giving up"

Exactly. Even if we squeezed in the play offs, the only sides I would fancy us against of our likely opponents are Ipswich or West Brom. and even then we have already lost to both this season. Coventry, Leeds and Southampton would be very difficult.

The thing is we fancied ourselves last season and totally bombed. We were a different team them last 10 games and not in a good way.

If we squeeze in late and can end the season in good form you never know, the teams you mention above could easily hit a bad run at the wrong time... all teams in this league are capable of that.

I agree about Kav.

I think every club from 7th to 14th is saying "we would be comfortably in the play offs with..." insert "better defense", "better attack", "better luck", "fewer injuries", "fewer daft individual errors".... etc.

Somehow we never remember the matches we shouldn't have won, where we rode our luck, like the stupid freekick Huddersfield conceded for our winner at their place.
