No Masks in Lidl

just been in Lidl, Newport Road. At least 15 people without masks, probably more. Families and groups of blokes. One group were asked by a lady about their masks. They replied they had no masks and would get some next time.
I was pretty stunned by the number of people all ages and male and female without masks. I asked the security guard on the door who was wearing his mask.
He replied, "They don't have to wear them, it is up to them."
This in a town currently under government scrutiny and ten mins drive from Yellow Rose, Central Park and Olivello restaurant.
Just been to fill the car up and counted 4 people in the tesco not even bothering to wear any face cover.

typical of how half arsed this country’s approach has been

I believe there is a greater responsibility of these large shops to set the standard and refuse entry to people if they are not wearing masks. Along with the police and wardens stopping and explaining the policy. Yes it's a thankless tasks, but pick your people and just do it. You have to start with the basics, don't give in to these people. Security is just that, big strapping blokes and lasses who can handle these situation
Now I'm aware of the pressures for the small business folk , but this is where the public should step in and help. I'm convinced there are more who know what is right.

The mask wearing guidelines are a paper exercise by the government to be appear to be doing something, without enforcement they’re pointless, many shops have virtually given up in trying to enforce mask wearing, the security guards on shop doors have all gone as have the queues to shop in supermarkets, were heading for a big increase in the spread and then those that have had the least regard for the guidelines will complain most if their freedoms are restricted.

Another thing that irks me is that there isn't anywhere near enough made of the fact that the virus only survives if it can be passed on to someone else. Every TV ad break should have time set aside for this message to be reinforced.
I know people think that we shouldn't live in fear of it because it isn't necessarily deadly for large parts of the population, but I think we've gone too far down that road and people do actually need scaring as to the reality that it can be deadly for a lot of people and that you can't tell just who will die from it just by looking at them.

Do we know the long term implications though? It may not he had to be deadly to everyone but it might be in the long term?

I took my first trip on the Moscow Metro this afternoon since March. Despite masks being compulsory only about a third of people were wearing them and of those probably half weren't covering their mouth and/or nose with them.

The reason for the subway journey was to go to a football game. It was third division so only about two hundred people in attendance. Everyone had to wear a mask to get in. By the time people were sat down three quarters had either removed them or lowered them. It's not just the Boro with an **** hole problem.

The government guidelines to stores is clear - the enforcement is a police matter. There is no way in the world I would ask store colleagues to attempt to police this. It would kick off big style and they don’t deserve to be put in that position.

Anyone who doesn’t wear a mask also has a get out of jail card. All they have to say to the police is ‘it causes me distress’. It is that simple.

Just back from London and around 30% were either not wearing masks on public transport or thought protecting the chin rather than nose was the answer.
We are miles behind the likes of France in terms of compliance.

We spoke to an American family who said they thought USA was bad for mask wearing until they came over here.

We'll find out eventually I guess. Given the feedback from one of our own forum members who was struck down with it, it does seem to have some lingering if not ongoing effects.

I don't know any figures but I know a few over here who have post covid issues. Also I know at least 10 people who had it and now state they are okay.

Unfortunately this is what’s it’s like most places. I was in Lidl on the Trunk Road a week or two ago, and at least 50% of people weren’t wearing them.

I said on another thread yesterday that a local lockdown in Middlesbrough would be catastrophic for the people, businesses and the town. Unfortunately far too many people don’t seem to care. It’s so frustrating.

A Boro fan tweeted to me the following response to my Lidl masks post.
"Snitches get stitches, Rob" !!

I was in Manhattan yesterday for an MRI. A complete contrast to this Everyone was wearing masks and keeping well apart on trains, subways and buses. Even walking across the park, where people had their masks off or down, they were covering mouth and nose when passing anyone else.

I was in Spain 6 weeks ago and had a similar experience. It does seem like many Brits think they’re above being responsible.

I don't see why shops can't take responsibility and refuse entry to people not wearing masks. I was walking down Scarborough sea front and one of the arcades had a big bloke on the door telling people no mask, no entry. It's the only time I've seen it and it was good to see.
Absolutely standard here on Long Island and I've never seen anyone argue about it.
