NFL - The new season approaches!

That's a shame. I think a lot of fans were looking forward to see how Rogers at the Jets played out.
For it to be cut short so soon is an anticlimax for all.

At his age, that could well be the end of his career too.
4 snaps is just horrendous luck.

He should be able to make a comeback if everything goes well, but agree you would think age will play a part.

No, the order is correct.

The final cuts are after the third pre season game, so the starters play first game, few play a couple of quarters of the second, then the ressies. Third game is the ressies / camp bodies.

Here's a link to a report of the Redskins, sorry Commanders, final pre-season game against the Bengals -

Depends on each team, there are no hard and fast rules.

Browns played hardly any starters week 1 pre -season, maybe 2 drives second game and the first quarter week 3.

It is mostly about finding players to fill the final few places on the active roster and practice squad though.

Agree, should have added a disclaimer "typically".

The big name, big contract starters don't often suit up for pre-season game 3.....but nothing at all stopping the starting players playing all three games. Well, imagine the NFLPA would probably talk about striking.......

Yes they only really play on the last game

The rest are basically a battle royal of those wanting to catch the eye and make a roster or practice team spot.

Depends on the team also and if they have new coaches which usually happens a a lot during the off-season. Niners nearly gave Trey Lance a whole game prior to him being traded, but maybe that was putting him in the shop window to prove his fitness.

Generally though most teams know their starters it’s up to the drafted and those signed on free agency to see if they can (just) make the roster.

It’s not true

Rogers missed both openers yet played game 3 as did cobb

Same with Allen at the bills and Diggs.

Game three is the season rehearsal game.

I'll just leave these stats here for the Jets v Giants pre-season game three.

Rogers played 8 snaps

Daniel Jones didn't suit up.....DeVito is an undrafted rookie....🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Not taking either side of the argument here, but that stat says Rodgers attempted 8 passes. Doesn't mean he only took 8 snaps.
I’m highlighting that this looks like a shift from the norm as they now only have 3 games so it seems the last one is the biggest priority.

Anyone see the news report from a bar in Green Bay. They have an offer on where if the Jets lose all drinks are free. When Rodgers went down injured there was huge celebrations and everyone drank loads expecting an easy Bills win but the late win meant all their bar tabs were called in. Haha.

Think that is a season long offer though so a full season without Rodgers leading them could cost the bar a fair bit.

True 👍

But #2 and #3 QBs were out there a lot longer.

Think for what it's worth everyone can make their own judgements about how pre-season works, none of us are NFL coaches 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

The NFL is super physical and risk of injury is very high and due to the season being short a season ending injury is very common. There are loads of restrictions on how many snaps players can play in pre-season and even in training. It's not worth going all out in meaningless games so nobody does. In football the chances of injury is fairly small because it's low contact. In the NFL you have 300lb players throwing themselves head first at your knees.

That being said, pre-season in the NFL isn't much different to pre-season in football in that there is no set way to do it. It's a mix of fitness work, team work, playing youngsters and mostly rotating. There is very little opportunity for a real test of 1st choice playing against another 1st choice team. Results are meaningless. For the 1st string avoiding injury is more important than impressing anyone. For the kids then making an impression is more important. Don't think it's anything worth arguing about too much.

The big difference with the nfl same as with rugby is you can’t really play friendlies in nfl as you need intensity or you get injured.

Pro bowl is a bit different.
