Nathan Wood

giving him away was such a strange decision and goes against everything the club should represent

As said above, we didn't have a choice he wanted 1st team football and had a year left.

I think we have a real issue about giving our young players a pathway into the team and for all the talk of Carrick using our academy how many did he bring into the first team squad on Saturday (not including established players)? None. And that is with 9 subs.

Hackney only got in by chance and circumstance. We have a lot of talent in our Academy and are going to see it go to waste? I think a lot of it boils down to short termism and our managers feeling pressurised to bring in established players.

The only Academy prospect who has really been brought through by an established manager in recent years is Tav under Tony Pulis.

I believe there is a concern that the quality of the senior players at the academy is too variable which means the best players aren't being challenged enough in training.

That said, a healthy academy is probably only (or maybe should be) providing 1-2 graduates to the first team each year. For all our failings we don't have a bad record though some of that in recent years comes from Martin Carter's scouting in London.

Pulis: Tav & Fry
Woodgate: Spence, Coulson, Pears
Warnock: Jones, (Coburn)
Wilder: none
Carrick: Hackney

This season it looks like we have bought young prospects rather than using the academy which is presumably a sign that the current seniors aren't seen as making the grade this season. Clearly we have Brynn out on loan and possibly Coburn will go out on loan as well. Hopefully the new U21 league will challenge them more effectively and some of them start pushing for the first team.

Hackney got in because Leo liked what he saw in the U21s.

Carrick has just given a 16 year old his debut and gave a number of players the chance in pre season. Coburn, Bilongo and Coulson have been on the bench in the league too.

There’s a path way, but you have to earn it.

Which youth players should be in the side?

It's sad to say that unless we get an injury crisis Coburn won't get a run of games either. If we don't he will end up being given away too. It's a shame but that is the reality over how most youngsters break in - think of Hackney, Coulson, Spence, Gibson, even as far back as the likes of Downing.

Good to hear we have a sell on clause. Hopefully in the range of 30-40%, but I guess we will never know. I heard he only had a year left on his Swans contract but that may be wrong. He would have struggled to get game time here last year, and unless he signed a new contract, he would have left for free this summer. So I guess at least we got something out of this, which previously we might not have.

If he was unwilling to renew then we have done the right thing. Hopefully we get an unexpected injection of cash to top up the squad.

We desperately need to get them out on loan more but we seem to struggle to do this. At the moment only we only have goalkeepers out.

But had Wilder stayed in post or Carrick took over more quickly would Hackney have got an opportunity? I'm not sure.

Pre-season and R1 of the league cup ok - but not trusted for the league.

I don't know about in the side, but in the matchday 20 you'd think there would be scope for some of the u21s. I find it hard to see how any would make a breakthrough at the moment. Maybe they aren't good enough, but as above Hackney would probably have been in the same position if we hadn't had such a bad start to last season.

Looks pretty clear who blooded the best youth....
