Name the best ever all time Boro side from riverside era ( with a twist )

Interestingly everyone has put Valdes in goal.

Now yes, he was at Barca when they won just about everything, but did they really need a top keeper with the team they had - I know everyone talks about Messi, Iniesta, Xavi etc, but the defence was world class as well - Pique, Puyol with Mascherano in front of them

I don't think so, and I don't think he was.

I'd personally have Schwarzer

I had the same thought but it's hard to know. Valdes did win la liga keeper of the year a few times and most clean sheets etc. But then would he have done at another club? I suspect he got his game because he was a good keeper who could play with his feet, probably ahead of his time a bit in that respect. Was he a great keeper though? Not sure about that.

Horses for courses. I think even at his peak Valdes wouldnt have been as good for us as Schwarzer was. Schwarzer wouldn't have been as good for Barcelona though.

Certainly massively underrated by some the big Aussie. Could easily have been number 1 at a much bigger club. We were lucky to have him.

In terms of what I saw at Boro Woodgate, IMHO, was better. The best player ever to play in the Prem; Henry, never got a kick on Woody's debut. I sat amongst some Arsenal fans at that game and they were aghast at just how good he was.

I love Pally but Woodgate, on his day, was imperious.
I don't think Woody is up against Pallister, IMO Pallister is the best centre half we had and his career is better than any other one that played for us. Woody is up against Southgate I think and again in my humble opinion Woody was the better centre half of the two.

The team of Galacticos we can pick from that era is pretty amazing really. Outside of the big fellas is there any other club that can compare with those names?
This is why I started this thread as it’s truly astonishing when you look at our past names. You often forget just who has played for us.

I’m a massive Schwarzer fan but Valdés at his prime was a far better keeper. The whole unnecessary goalkeeper argument I just don’t understand. Apart from a height issue (which the entire defence had until Pique arrived) he was a great shot stopper, decent at commanding his area and absolutely peerless in his distribution. The latter is important in a modern keeper, doubly so at Barca back then. Which shocked me because as I recall, it was pretty terrible when he played for us.

Valdes

Reizeger
Southgate
Woodgate
Ziege

Mendieta
Gazza
Boateng
Merson

Juninho

Viduka

Honourable shouts for Emerson, Ravanelli, Boxsic, Jimmy Floyd. I always pick Viduka in any Boro team and this one is no different.

Most were on good form at Boro, some played their best football with us.

Who would be the manager. The easy one to pick would be El Tel but technically he wasn’t manager.

I can't get involved with this one. Every time I think of a team someone else comes along and puts another name in the pot. How we never won anything with all those fantastic players is beyond me.

For me only Maddren was better than Woodgate.

Is there a player we all 100% agree in our best 11.

Ziege seems like the one we all would pick but any other definites.

Apart from our one and only proper trophy?

Juninho played his best football for us, he was brilliant.

I'd throw Merson in instead, he was good for us but had been better at Arsenal.
