Music you discovered later in life

Loads of stuff

Jazz - John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Jan Garbarek
Country - Jason Isbell, Steve Earle, Drive By Truckers,
Americana - Rhiannon Giddens, North Mississippi Allstars,
Folk - Skerryvore, Adam Holmes, This Is The Kit
Afro - Fela Kuti, Ali Farka Toure, Mbongwana Star, Ibibio Sound Machine, Songhuoy Blues
Classical - Mozart, Vaughan Williams, Beethoven, Holst, Max Richter

Other genres, electro-swing, Funk, basically I'll have a listen to anything, enjoyed Stormzy's Glasto set last year, I like a lot of fusion music where two or more genres are combined.

Listen without prejudice people.

Some good African artists in your list Muttley 👍
I've got my African playlist on now. Great stuff.

I have always had an eclectic taste in music, I can’t think of any individual, group or genre that I have gotten into that I previously disliked. Maybe some punk music has grown on me over time.

The one genre I have always disliked is heavy metal. Never understood why people liked it, just a load of people making a loud noise, simply because they could  Give me Abba any day

I must admit having thunk about it a little more. I have a great appreciation for this fella that maybe I didn’t used to. This song should be a Boro anthem.

Some thought provoking stuff on here- touched a nerve or two this end. Elton John was fantastic during the Bernie Taupin era, Blue Moves is a brilliant album, largely ignored. Agree that Carly Simon has a fantastic voice.

Electronic- I was listening to an album of theirs last week. New Order meets the Smiths meets the Pet Shop boys...

Could that be due to having members of New Order, Smiths and Pet Shop Boys ;);)

nick lowe, i had heard his hits from the 80s and found them ok but nothing more, but discovered his latter albums , laid back with great lyrics for the "older" listener.
too much into punk to like simon and garfunkel as a kid, but paul simon has become one of my favourite artists

What's 'heavy' though? Led Zep? Or Korn? I can't stand Death Metal, like most people, or even Thrash Metal like Metallica, but I mean if ACDC are classed as Heavy Metal then it definitely has its place imho.(y)

Thanks to the A Word I am now a devotee of I Am Kloot, not sure that counts as music discovered in later life as in my world they are quite modern 😁

Paulo Conte, If you can get past the first minute you`ll enjoy this, theres about 5 versions of it as he changes the arrangement at each concert. Luckily heard this guy by chance.

Its something you think youve heard before Brilliant IMHO.

Oh, I agree it has its place for many, just not in my collection. I wont say there are absolutely no tracks that I could never listen to, I have tried to enjoy some but always failed, I have never owned an album by AC/DC, Whitesnake, Iron Maiden etc

Chemical Brothers. I have always liked electronic music from the late 70s and early 80s, but university and indie disco took over for me in the late 80s, 90s and beyond. I did enjoy the Madchester indie dance stuff, but never really get things like the Chemical Brothers until recently.

Oh fair enough. So you're definitely classing bands like Whitesnake as Heavy Metal? Maiden definitely are. Black Sabbath probably one of the pioneers. I don't mind it.

The genre I can't do is (modern) RNB. I hate this genre that's emerged thats kind of manufactured hip hop where the perpetrator is really just badly singing (not rapping, but sort of talking tunefully) but to a 'tuneful' melody that was written by someone who also writes songs for boy bands. Its a hideous cocktail and Radio 1Xtra lives off it. I have a selection of tracks in every other genre that I like, including classic hip hop.

As an aside, when did R&B stop meaning 'the blues' and start meaning sh1te like Bruno Mars? Cos the genres couldn't be more different but have the same name.

Yes I class Iron Maiden as Heavy metal, rightly or wrongly, I suppose is personal opinion.

Totally agree about Radio 1Xtra. I gave up on it. As for R&B that seems to constantly change all the time. It seems a long way from its roots thats for sure. Not overly keen on Mars myself, a lot of whats classed as R&B seems just modern pop to me. Perhaps its my age, we all turn into our dads eventually
