Middlesbrough double transfer blow leaves Neil Warnock 'devastated'
Boro's hopes of signing a winger and striker in the coming days have been dashedMiddlesbrough have been dealt a double transfer blow in the last 24 hours, with Neil Warnock told the two players he hoped to sign this week won't be allowed to leave their clubs.
Warnock was hopeful of landing a winger and a striker on loan from the Premier League and said he was told at the weekend by one of the clubs that one of the deals is "100% happening".
But yesterday both top flight clubs pulled the plug on the exit of the players, saying they can't risk leaving themselves short in the second half of the season.
It's a huge blow for Warnock, with less than a week to go before the deadline, but the Boro boss remains adamant he will still strengthen his squad, which has stretched to the limit by injuries in recent weeks.
As well as looking to bolster his forward line, he now wants to add a defender as well after the injury to Anfernee Dijksteel and the nasty blow for Dael Fry against Blackburn left him short at the back.
Asked for a transfer update in his press conference on Tuesday morning, Warnock said: "I'm not close at all really.
"The two lads I thought we had a great chance with last week, in the last 24 hours the Premier League managers have said they're not letting them out. So it's been a devastating week really.
"In one particular case, I was told two days ago it was 100% happening. To find out things have changed is disappointing to say the least. They said certain players they were expecting to be fit haven't got fit in time so they can't risk fringe players going out."
