Middlesbrough double transfer blow leaves Neil Warnock 'devastated'

Boro's hopes of signing a winger and striker in the coming days have been dashed

Middlesbrough have been dealt a double transfer blow in the last 24 hours, with Neil Warnock told the two players he hoped to sign this week won't be allowed to leave their clubs.

Warnock was hopeful of landing a winger and a striker on loan from the Premier League and said he was told at the weekend by one of the clubs that one of the deals is "100% happening".

But yesterday both top flight clubs pulled the plug on the exit of the players, saying they can't risk leaving themselves short in the second half of the season.

It's a huge blow for Warnock, with less than a week to go before the deadline, but the Boro boss remains adamant he will still strengthen his squad, which has stretched to the limit by injuries in recent weeks.

As well as looking to bolster his forward line, he now wants to add a defender as well after the injury to Anfernee Dijksteel and the nasty blow for Dael Fry against Blackburn left him short at the back.

Asked for a transfer update in his press conference on Tuesday morning, Warnock said: "I'm not close at all really.

"The two lads I thought we had a great chance with last week, in the last 24 hours the Premier League managers have said they're not letting them out. So it's been a devastating week really.

"In one particular case, I was told two days ago it was 100% happening. To find out things have changed is disappointing to say the least. They said certain players they were expecting to be fit haven't got fit in time so they can't risk fringe players going out."

I not sure I believe any of this. It’s not 100% until they are unveiled.
Watch the press conference Lee [I just posted from the club on this board] and you will see what he said:

But other teams players could get injured in training, matches even Covid. I don’t think Neil would lie but there are so many variables I think he was a bit careless in being adamant these players were coming

Guaranteed to happen as soon as he opened his mouth about it. That's obviously nothing to do with why the deals are dead, but it seems as soon as we announce a deal as "almost done" it dies. It's just how it goes for us.

This the boro, he'll learn.

What can we do? If managers won't send them out on loan. I imagine one was maybe Grosicki as he wasn't getting a kick until Sam came in.

No club is signing anyone. It's not just a middlesbrough 'thing'. I think fans have to be realistic with covid and losing millions every month. Also clubs won't want to part with players because they can't get replacements.

It's even harder to buy or loan players from abroad now.

It's more frustrating that we are so near to having a real go for the playoffs (we still are). We are probably one or two decent players away from a very good side. That said I don't see any point bringing in players that are no better than we have. They will be like Martin Craine or RVLP and just not get a kick.

It really wouldn't suprise me if we didn't get anyone. It's not the end of the world as these lads have got us this far. It's just we are fecked if we get 3-4 injuries. I think the starting 11 is as good as anything in the league.

We wouldn't want to end up with another Nmecha 😉

Lets face it this is a 'treading water' season.
Guess we've just got to be thankful that we're at the right end of the table.
Near rivals such as Stoke have brought 3 or 4 in (including Jack Clarke from Tottenham) and the relegated PL teams seem to have held onto their 'core'.

Feel a bit sorry for Neil who must feel he is fighting with one hand behind his back :(

On the positive side I'd like to see us 'experiment' a bit more now we are pretty much safe.
Spending a bit more time in the opposition half would be a start.
We have been taking apart by quick 'one twos' in our last two home matches.
We struggle to get to the 'one' part.

Leaving NW aside I wouldnt trust any of our scouting team to come up with a decent player anyway. They get far more wrong than right. Is Gill still getting a decent salary?

Go back to the list surely ?
Neil Warnock said the club has said there is a bit of money to spend this window , it's how they spend it which is the crucial bit
I expect Neil will want proven , experienced players he can trust , but they are the ones which cost the most . They may be trying to convince him to go for more of the gambles . He said he may take a gamble on one , why not gamble on a couple and see what happens . We can all come up with names , here's a few I would go for
One from
Liam Lindsay LCH Loan
Declan Gallagher LCH £500k
Cedric Kipre RCH Loan
Natt Phillips RCH Loan
Lewis Montsma RCH
Jon Guthrie LCH
Zak Jules LCH
2 from
Thomas Robert RW
Kwadwo Baah LW
Josh Mullin AM RW
Carlos Mendes Gomes RW
Reiss Nelson RW AM Loan
Cristian Atsu LW Loan
Izzy Brown Loan
Connor Gallagher Loan - WBA not playing him
Swap Johnson or Wing for Mowatt
One from
Kyle Joseph
Luke Jephcott
Joe Pigott
Chuks Aneke
Charlie Wyke
Patrick Klimala Loan
And try a swap deal - Britt and Fletcher for Diedhiou / Nick Powell / Cauley Woodrow or Joe Lolley .
Better than losing both for nothing in 5 months
