Middlesbrough Council Bankrupt...

Do we expect them to go the same way as Birmingham and others? I noticed Brum residents up in arms over a £2.5m cycle-lane...

They might be bankrupt but I've been to Birmingham a few times over the last few years and although there was always work going on until recently, presumably to with the Commonwealth games in mind (or at least a factor) the City looks in really good shape to me. In fact, apart from Leeds, I reckon its the best city in England now, with the possible exception of London. Beats Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Derby, Bristol, Southampton. Not been to Liverpool recently mind you.

Couldn't agree more mate.

People need to understand that funding for projects comes from a variety of sources and often with requirements on what it can and can't be used for.

So when a council spends large sums of heritage lottery money on cultural buildings or events, they are not starving schools of money for buildings etc.

The bottom line is that local authorities have lost circa 60-80% of central government funding since 2010 because the tories are ideologically starving them of money (Labour councils hit worst). They then tell local authorities to Hike their Council tax, knowing that numpty residents will blame them rather that the government.

All of our services need to be funded correctly. That's not to say that some couldn't be more efficient, but we need to face to to the fact that we will get the public services we deserve

Birmingham city council spent circa £500m on athlete'ss accommodation for the commonwealth games, the building wasn't completed in time and not a single athlete stayed in it. It's bankrupt largely because of mismanagement of funds and infrastructure projects, largely like every single public funded authority in the country

if you've ever tendered for Government/Local authority contracts you'll see how out of touch they are with public sector, I've put in prices 4 times more than I would charge the public sector, really I don't want the job price, and have won the contract, only because I'm on the trusted list, then just sub contracted it, who many cases will sub contract it again, 3 firms making a profit

I'm sure New Zealand cancelled their hosting of the commonwealth games due to an estimated cost of £7bn!
It was Brisbane aus and yes they did.

I fully expect Newcastle or some other uk city to be “awarded” to save face as it’s the royals games after all.

If not it will die

Yes, they're being taken advantage of by unscrupulous private companies. So much for the market lowering costs.

They should have kept their own tradesmen rather than being forced to get rid through hideous cuts.

Ye labour council but it's about those tory cu*ts.

When will you understand that they're all an embarrassment, they're all on the take, they all mismanage whatever is allocated to them, the colour of the rosette means nothing.
You're the embarrassment if you can't see what's been happening for the past 13 years.

That's how we get 13 years plus of Tory governments
