Wilder was so one-dimensional, the only way he was going to have success playing with his system was having the right players for the right roles within the team.
Matt Clarke wasn't the answer playing as an overlapping centre halve, and Mowatt wasn't the answer playing as our box-to-box midfielder (although I believe Wilder still wanted him).
He certainly didn't do himself any favours with his refusal so give Forss a run in the team, who ironically would have been perfect for Wilder's system if he'd given him the chance, but he spat his dummy out and decided not to play him due to not getting the strikers he really wanted in my opinion.
Good managers can get the best out of what they have to work with, but Wilder's inflexibility and stubbornness meant it was only going to go one way.
Actually, now that the dust has settled a bit, it's easy to see the damage Wilder caused.
Tavernier might still be at the club
Mowatt and Clarke wouldn't be at the club
Ikpeazu would be at the club, and maybe Boro would have been in the playoffs last season
Connolly and Balogun wouldn't have been signed
Some of the younger players might have been played sooner
Boro might have given the League Cup a better shot
I can't imagine how frustrated Steve Gibson must feel. He signed Wilder on his reputation and Wilder screwed up royally and totally. Carrick came in with next to no experience and immediately turns things round. With all due respect to Carrick, anyone could have made a better fist of this season than Wilder.
