Media Walls??

What on earth are they all about? A mate has a new build, with one. Erm it is a big TV on the wall... No sound bar, no sky/virgin. I have a media corner, TV, virgin, switch, Xbox, fire cube, Wii, wireless surround sound, router, 8 port switch etc. All hidden away.. I just call it the Tele.. is this a new fancy selling point to say, you can hang a TV there? Or am I just old and grumpy? 🙄😀

They're awful imo, especially if built with an alcove for the tv because when you buy a bigger tv it won't fit.

The bigger sin though is they invariably come with fireplaces below the tv, meaning the tv is mounted so high it's on the moon, many having the tilt of shame pointing slightly downwards.

Think people call them media walls because they're usually a false wall for the wiring and alcoves for the mrs to fill with "live love laugh" ornaments etc

A couple of reasons people have tvs on walls. They are so large nowadays havig on a cabinet at an angle in the corner is impractical you are losing somuch floor space and where do get a cabinet that big. Also the danger of tipping something so big from pets and young kids its so much safer on a wall. Personally a prefer tvs on wall i would rather look eye level or slightly up rather than down at something in a corner. Also think most tvs in corner on cabinets look dated. I dont have any media walls mind i think they are a bit of a fad its easied to hide cables in walls than build a false media wall. 10 years time we will probably end up with a tv taking up the entire wall.

Is it like a pay wall. Do people pay to watch their stuff high up on the wall ?
Well in a manner of speaking yes because they're usually a few hundred quid to a grand plus depending how much work goes in plus it seems like a requirement to have a multicoloured electric fireplace built in below the tv

I don't mind tvs on walls, and agree it looks better than sat on something. But "media walls" are a specific thing people are having built and businesses are springing up to supply

Stuff like this basically. Which has you watching tv like this

Ergonomically, the centre of your tv should be about 42 inches from the ground so that the centre of the tv is roughly straight ahead

It can still be mounted at that height, and can still fit in centr channel for surround systems if people don't want a sound bar.

new bigger tv can be mounted and should maintain the same centre. Cables easy to hide

Sadly the only real place for a TV in my living room is above the fireplace, unless I got rid of furniture.

It's too high and it gives me neck strain, having a tilting bracket has improved it, but there's not much else I can do.

Thought this was going to be about the BBC website making you log in to d̶a̶t̶a̶ ̶h̶a̶r̶v̶e̶s̶t̶ personalise the experience.

We have one, of sorts. It was one of them things that when we refurbished the house she was hell bent on, so I let her have it in exchange for her piping down about a few other things. I didn’t have any issue with the tv mounted in the corner. I do prefer large tvs to be mounted tho, wherever it is.

It is quite good TBF. It has nice panelled cupboard on either side and you’re not really looking up at the telly as the room is quite “long”.

Your viewing calc do people really sit on a sofa upright like that watching tv. Personally i think the first of your bad examples could be ok they could lower the tv if they got rid of the awful looking sound bar second is clearly high. I noticed in your examples no fireplace for most homes in the uk you have two long walls in a living room one to put the sofa on and the opposite with a fire place quite often with gas fittings its big job to get rid or change a fireplace. Personally i think media walls will look dated pretty quick and might devalue your house but theres no accounting for other peoples taste.

They are definitely becoming more and more popular as a 'solution' to incorporate larger TV's. The height of the TV is definitely a challenge when you try to incorporate a fireplace too.

I have an audio visual business and we do a lot of media walls in new build houses. We often incorporate the TV and sound system (and source devices) within the construction, using acoustically transparent fabric and/or panelling. Everything can be built to the clients specification and style.

We have an office and demo space in Middlesbrough too!

That's just a diagram. If you sit in your sofa or chair at home and take a tape measure and measure floor to your eye height while relaxing, it will be within an inch or two of that point give or take a small bit of leeway due to different sofa height and user height but 42 inches is the average. But even if your sofa is unusually high or low it won't put you in the range of many people's tv mounting heights

We had a fireplace when we moved in but got rid of it because we never use it, we just use gas central heating. We took the surround down ourselves, sold it for £100. Paid a gas engineer £70 to cap off the supply in the wall and then skimmed the wall. No different to what you'd need to do really to shove an electric led fire in front of it or build a media wall in front of it.

Uk living rooms have always had this constraint but with the advent of flatscreens people decided to start whacking them above fireplaces.

When we first did our living room after moving in we definitely had our tv too high. We angled it down a bit and it wasn't too bad as we had a recliner sofa but it was definitely not great. When I redid the room last year we did it all properly and it's far better.

We have to have ours on a stand in the corner as we have a large window one side and a large patio door on the other.

Brilliant idea in my opinion.

It's something for the eye after spending 3 hours scrolling through various streaming services not finding anything to watch 👍
