McGree

Hard to say what to make of McGree, but you could say that about Giles also so it's hard to say if both should be working together when they clearly have passing and control issues. Personally, I just think it's something that training and maybe a settled position can repair. Giles meanwhile maybe just needs more confidence as he clearly has the skill package he just needs to understand that being on the field as a wingback also requires defensive responsibilities, but given time he probably can get better. Before his goal yesterday, I just wanted him off the pitch but Carrick kept him on and low and behold he goes and scores-- funny ol' game eh.

Both Giles and McGree are young but they’re keeping Mowatt and McNair out of the side, so they must be doing something right? Maybe once Crooks and Watmore are available then I’m sure we’ll have changes.

Seems to me that McGree has strange posture/gait. Often, he has both feet planted wide apart meaning he is flat-footed and unable to change direction or move off quickly enough. Must make it more difficult for him to control the ball, too.

His narrow LM role reminds me of Parlour playing on the right.. It's tactical and probably gives decent cover for Giles going forward.. so if it works then great.

I'll be honest, mcgree isn't my cup of tea but he's not a LM. Although I didn't think he was great in the middle for wilder either, I'm not sure he's good enough to be in the team in any position tbh but I'm currently judging him on a position that isn't natural to him.

I have said a couple of times on different threads that I think he had a poor game yesterday, but is worth persevering with.

Never stops running/moving off the ball. Created a lot space even when having an off game yesterday. The third goal he made a great run inside that created the space for Giles.

It's a good counterpoint to Jones playing as a more typical winger on the right.

Why do people keep saying 442 with Giles on the wing. The formation is never that straightforward otherwise we would be completely overrun in the middle.

Mcgree tucks in and gives us an extra body in the centre. Giles is the winger when we attack. Smith then shifts round to make a 3. When we defend Giles is full back and mcgree picks up the wide man or attacking full back.

It works well they just need to improve at it.

I agree Hull away was not McGree's best game for us, but he was everywhere trying and that energy is good, particularly as Johnny's engine can't go on for ever.

the Hull game we moved between 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1.. I even saw us 3-5-2

Michael Carrick’s teamtalks be like..

Must admit I haven't seen either of Carrick's games so far and was intrigued how it converted from paper onto the pitch. Your explanation makes a lot of sense.

If he's playing narrower I'd be keen on McGree finding space in the inside left channel, further up the pitch. If he gets free in that space I think his touch and vision mean he should be able to pick out (or play off) the front two.

We can't really afford to give anyone a free role in this side (we're not good enough without the ball to facilitate that) but finding innovative ways to get our creative players into space is a big plus.

Can't wait for tomorrow for my first glimpse of Carrick-ball in action :)

He’s not good enough. Like a few of his team mates. Other than what Woody says, the table doesn’t lie.

"lightweight" is the word that immediately springs to mind.

One thing that does go in his favour is he definitely offers something a bit different to our other midfielders.

So far though, has mainly flattered to deceive. Quite a frustrating player actually, has some good touches, gets into some good areas but his final ball or shot is usually either poorly executed or the wrong choice. Has a habit of hanging onto it for too long too.

You would think if anyone could get him playing well though it'd be a former midfielder of Carrick's pedigree.

Runs around a lot, and that is pretty much all he does atm. Push Giles forward and bring Bola in. Put Dijksteele the other side.
