McAuley Langstaff.

I remember in the mid 1970s I think Willie Maddren had a newsagents in Haverton Hill and he said 75% fo fans who came in were Sunderland supporters. I think it has changed since then. Politically Stockton District has not been connected with County Durham for 55 years now and Sunderland are not considered one of the Big 6 clubs in England that they were in the 1920s and 30s. They were the biggest spenders on players in England in that period. I get the impression after 1945 ex Durham coal miners started to move to Teesside to work for ICI and they brought their football allegiances with them, but their children and grandchildren have not.

It must have been boycotted by Boro fans in that case. As a kid at school in Billingham in the 60's and 70's there were always a few Sunderland fans about, and a sprinkling of Newcastle fans, Boro had far more followers. There were probably more with an interest in Man Utd than the Geordies, to be honest.

I grew up in Stockton. We had one Sunderland fan in our year at school. His name was Mackem. Any non-Boro fans were either Man Utd or Liverpool. There were also a handful of Newcastle fans.

There will have been more in Billingham because of miners moving down to work at ICI. I know of quite a few who's kids follow Boro, their local side, not their dad's.

Back to the OP for those that have seen a lot of him do they think he could “do a vardy” in that he could take his game to the next level in a higher league.
He is a totally different player. Vardy's main attribute was pace, he was a brilliant finisher but pace to get in behind was a key part to his game. Langstaff isnt rapid but his finishing is excellent, hold up play is decent too. There is definitely a player there who can play in this division it just all goes back to style of play from the team. If they play it over the top or whatever he wont get on the end of many balls, but if they're passing out, intricate and looking for a bloke to play no9 and get on the end of chances and good build up play, he's it. He'll go to Coventry and score goals.

Very similar to Guisborough.

“the majority of Stockton people support Sunderland” were his words.

What people on this message board say is irrelevant. We can say as many daft things as we want, we're not running a business that relies on these people paying the way.

I've been very critical of Gibson over the years on his ability to increase our fanbase. He's far too parochial and even being in the PL for all those years with superstar players in a rapidly growing market he did nothing to increase our fanbase. That has cost us a fortune over the years because there is a global audience that want to watch football, want to spend money, want to stream/listen/attend/buy merchandise etc that are swelling the coffers of other clubs and Gibson has failed to capture any of that market. It's no surprise when the largest town, right next door, is seen as a far-off land that supports another club.
Totally agree. Gibson's constant use of: "the town" which to me stank as deliberately snubbing the Gtr Teesside area, back in the days when he actually used to speak to the media - if you can remember that far back - has never sat comfortably with me as someone who has never lived in 'the town'.

There were alot of Leeds fans in places like Guisborough in the 1970s especially amongst under 18s - from 1963 to 1975 Leeds were probably the most successful side in England by win percentage. Guisborough was also in North Yorkshire till 1974. In 1966 Boro were 2 divisions below Leeds and from 1954 to 1974 outside the top division.

Diallo would have been the ultimate banter move

Langstaff is the romantic dream move.. local lad.. When Saturday Comes sort of deal.

Seems to be at that Vardy or not Vardy stage..

If he comes ill give him a fair crack of tge whip. But every time I've seen him at County he hasn't impressed
