Maximo Park, Billingham and Boro's own, Paul Smith, has been in touch this morning.
"We are at number 1 in the midweek album charts! Yikes! Thank you! To stay there, we'll need some help.
Get a copy of the album here (only a fiver on iTunes FYI): https://ffm.to/naturealwayswins
A brilliant new album inspired by Paul's own wanderings as a lad around the flatlands and edgelands of his own native Billingham. Across the Tees, Paul has witnessed how nature is reclaiming the former industrial spine of the Black Path.
These edgelands have become our salvations and green oasis through lockdown. Ribbons of nature, flora and fauna entry routes in town. Paul always seems to have his finger on the pulse and forever sticking up for his native north east and Teesside.
Paul messaged me this morning...
"We're Number 1 in the midweek album charts, but it'll be a real battle against bigger acts to stay there on Friday!"
They need our help to see off the likes of Alice Cooper.
Paul later tweeted to me
"Imagine a Billingham lad being Number 1 on Friday (I can't!)."

Just can't get away with Maximo Park/Paul Smith.

I'm glad he/they are doing well but it's not my cup of tea even though one track has Pauline Murray (Penetration/Invisible Girls) doing backing vocals. I guess the album was recorded at her studios Polestar.

He did a very good interview with her which I saw in The Baltic art gallery. She still sounds great.

Great album. Already got my copy. £15 for the CD and a ticket for their show at Brudenell. Absolute bargain. Back in the 90s I'd still have been 99p short of just buying the CD!!!

Paul Smith's first Boro match memory that he sent me for
My Boro Debut (book)

My first game was Watford, under the floodlights at Ayresome Park, in 1990. I won the tickets by ringing in to TFM with a correct answer (probably Bernie Slaven). My Dad and I ended up in the Dickens Suite with some other competition winners - I think I borrowed my cousin's suit! There was a sweepstake on who would score the first goal, and we thought we had a bad deal when we got defender Simon Coleman. Obviously, he then went on to score and we won the sweep, but lost the match 2-1. We were meant to meet the players afterwards but they were upset after the loss, we were told. Luckily, we saw the injured Colin Cooper in the corridor outside our Suite, and he was extremely nice and posed for a photo. I think Boro losing managed to set me up to not expect too much from going to the football! I still get a buzz from the floodlit pitch, though.

Definitely Brudenell. It was an initial album launch show that they announced back in November. It's on 27th August, I think the one at Becketts is in September.

Excellent bit of artwork with the album for a couple of quid more. See you at Leeds Beckett... 8E1FC423-0C76-4395-B0D1-D76E358D9E57.jpg

Synners ground BTW

I get a mention in his interview with fmttm years ago 😎

The album shows what a disgrace it was to lose the Synners ground. Although it needed some work it was still an asset and the demise terrible.

Loving this!!

I dont think they have made a bad album, but this is right up there with their best.
Been on repeat for a week. Easily their best since The National Health. Gives you everything you want from a MP album

They were finally edged out to No.2 position in the charts by Brighton metallers Architect - but there were only a few hundred copies in it. A tremendous accomplishment for a superb album.
In recognition of that lets toast Maximo Park with their anti-anthem to Billingham and the edgelands between industry, post industry, connurbation and nature around the River Tees, Child of the Flatlands. Superb video it is too, filmed in Paul Smith's hometown, Billingham.
