Matthew Hoppe loaned out to San Jose

It hasn't worked out with Hoppe and probably never will but I'm happy for the club to take these sort of gambles. Some are going to pay off and some won't.

Sending him out on loan at least means he's off the wage bill and you just never know, this loan move could be the making of him (although it probably won't be😆).

The fee reported was in Euros and I seemed to remember it was around 2.5m.

12 months ago fans on here were saying we had wasted £2.75m on Akpom.

I am not saying Hoppe is as good as Akpom, but he has room to improve and is still only 22.

If he comes back here now, it'll be because he didn't succeed in the MLS, a league that is still weaker than the Championship, and in his native country.

I hope it's the last we see of him, and I don't mean that in a nasty way, I mean it positively.

I think it'll be unlikely he'll succeed here if he comes back off another unsuccessful spell at a club.

As said we have probably saved his wages by loaning him out and that saving goes toward loans or purchases in.

The general opinion of nearly all who saw him recently was that he was not ready for the Championship this season.

22yo back home to his native California
Only 2 years away from Bundasliga/La Liga

Gets his head together and kicks on with the national team. I thought he looked quite bright in pre season.. coming in from the left.

The kid has potential.. perhaps to similar to Josh Coburn and not up to speed to push on the left like Forss has on the right.

Great lifestyle in Cali.. will he even want to come back?

Hopefully he does well enough for them to want to take up the purchase option, and good luck to him.
If he has a good season folk will be clamouring for him back claiming the club are wallies for loaning him out in the first place, see Payero.

SJ — Probably the worst team in the MLS, so he’ll probably do ok. I can’t think of anything positive to say about him only from the moment he signed for us I thought we had been duped.
The one positive thing to say is that he is a very nice lad. Didn"t somebody say that when they met him on the train back to London from Norwich?

This is by no means the first time a player has been acquired and it hasn't worked out. Bought by a previous manager and doesnt fit into the way we play under a new coaching set up. All clubs have them.

To be fair I dont think Wilder wanted him, think it was Scott who made the decision to buy him. I remember Wilder kept saying he is a development player which meant he isnt going to get in his squad.

I think he was a risk that didnt cost much, maybe he can go back to the states and start firing goals in, you never know.

In a country run by another Trump administration he may be positively gagging to leave.

I dont know why we didn't just go to the "Guaranteed 20 goal a season striker" aisle in the supermarket and pick one up there for the same price as prospects like Hoppe - it's so easy this running a football club lark.

Fans on one hand will say "why cant we be like Brentford" and the other want us to only buy players who will be guaranteed to be a success.

I'd prefer to be like Brighton, the players they have signed for pennies and sold for millionds is unbelievable. The way they play is amazing, they have turned Jason Steele into this sweeper / goalkeeper who is very comfortable on the ball and has turned into a hell of a keeper. I actually had to check it was the same Steele we had as I couldnt believe what I was watching. If Sanchez is worth 25m then Steele must be worth more than that as he displaced Sanchez.

Brighton or Brentford it doesn't matter, they have a similar model that has proved to work. However lots of our fans dont have the patience / intelligence for us to try something like that as it doesn't happen in a few months.

Also the scale of what Brighton do is insane. In the summer of 2020 they signed 21 players from 10 different countries. The 2020/21 season, they sold 19 players and sent another 23 out on loan. That’s just one season.

The following season they signed 14, sold 24 and loaned out another 28.

Last year they signed 12, got rid of 20 and let another 29 out on loan.

They are constantly picking up young players from across the globe and loaning them all out. They are an outstanding football team who enjoy huge success in the transfer market but they sign a LOT of players who don’t make the step into their first team as well.

Well, we loaned out Akpom for most of his contract and then he came back and was the Golden Boot in the Championship. Maybe that's the plan for Hoppe.

I think the big problem is his hair. Never quite been right since he joined with that bleached blonde bouffant.
