Matt Clarke back in training

The scouting reports when we got him were that he was best on the left of a 3-man defence. He was meant to have a good engine and be able to get up and down the pitch quickly for a CB. Comfortable running with the ball.

We currently have Fry on the right and Lenihan on the left. Lenihan is our most two-footed defender and a lot better with the ball than people tend to realise. Mowbray was known to use him as a defensive midfielder from time to time. Both Lenihan and Clarke seem quite similar; robust defenders who are not afraid of putting their foot on the ball.

Given the long time out that Clarke has had, it seems unlikely he'll be starting any time soon. It would be good to get him back on the bench though. A four man unit of Lenihan, Fry, Clarke and RVDB with McNair also capable of filling in, seems pretty solid.

Our problem is not our defenders. It is our defensive "structure" or, to be precise, the lack of it. Put any two of those four in 4-2-3-1 behind a pair of defensive midfielders in an AK style set up and I pretty much guarantee we'll only concede once a month.

Lenihan is good on the ball, but I don't think he's a great defender.

Interesting, I did not know that, and I can see him being a better CDM than CB
