Mason Greenwood

I'd missed the diversion into parenting that this thread wandered down.

The notion that a child should be steered away from being inspired by the dedication and perseverance underpinning the impressive achievements of elite athletes is, quite frankly, fúĉking bonkers.

Got to be trolling.
Or you could do some research on the subject and find out for yourself whether it was trolling or not.

You didn't bother did you. You thought your uneducated opinion was all that was required. Nice one!

Besiktas have emerged as an option for Mason Greenwood The Turkish side are considering a six-month loan deal for the Man Utd striker.

Bit strange them loaning him off a club who have severed all ties with him..

I'll say the same to you that I said to Forss, what do you want to happen? For him to go to jail with no trial? Never be allowed to work again?

And he isn't a role model, he is a footballer. I addressed this point earlier. There is a fair argument that because of his profile, he may, normalise this behaviour.
I'm not really interested in getting into the wider argument but if you're seriously saying that footballers are not role models you are on a wind up.

Kids wait after matches to get autographs signed, they go mad if they see them in the street, they put their names on their shirts.

They copy them diving, their celebrations, their haircuts. They pretend to be them while playing football.

You may say Greenwood isn't. He's probably (excluding what has gone on) one of the exact players kids would look up to as the epitome of a child success story at the club.
Fair enough he's not Messi or Ronaldo but to suggest he isn't a role model is incorrect in my opinion.

I didn't say players are not perceived as role models. I simply said if my kids looked to a sportsman or celebrity as a role model I would have failed as a parent.

There is ample research backed up by evidence that sports folks, particularly, do not make good role models and it should be discouraged for multiple reasons. I did provide references earlier in the thread for anyone interested.

You are about the 3rd or 4th person to misinterpret my comment.

Yes I watched the programme on BBC last night about Kick Boxer and serial groomer Andrew Tate. I was disturbed by the number of young men who worship this bloke to the point of travelling to Bucharest to get a selfie outside his home.

The articles I read look at 2 factors, largely. Firstly, it is going to be very difficult to emulate a professional athlete. It's not a case of just trying harder.

The second major issue is that excelling in a single field tells you almost nothing about the person's personality or his qualities. It garuantees nothing.

There were other points raised in both white papers, such as wealth without contributing, the age of athletes, the unrealistic expectations placed on young men and women, but the 2 items above were the crux.

The case you highlight falls under the second problem and is the major train why I encouraged my children to find other role models like their mum.

I assumed they'd just terminated his contract when they made that statement last week, weird that they've just done absolutely nothing in reality. Slimeballs do be slimeballing.
