I do think the fact we're going to play with 2 up front should give us more options in terms of striker targets. Most teams are looking for strikers who can play up front on their own. Not essential for us and it might be we can unlock the potential of someone like this guy who is possibly overlooked by most, because of our style.

(Obviously we're Boro and this is strikers we're talking about, so won't happen. But I think the theory is sound).
Does it worry u we play an essentially outdated 2 upfront. If wilder doesnt get the right players it leaves us hamstrung. He style requires particular players and we seem to be struggling to get players over the line.

The lad from wolves is massively important he needs to deliver this season for us.

This might make a change
We've been good at paying money for proven scorers who flop here (Alves, Rhodes, Rudy)

Would be good to find one with no track record and turn them into Big John Hickton

I don't know if it's that outdated. It might be a rarity compared to most, but I don't think it's unique or particularly outdated. Karanka pretty much played 2 up front when we had Bamford and Vossen (Vossen might have played a bit deeper, but he certainly wasn't playing in midfield). Depends how you play it really.

Wilder obviously had a lot of success using the system with Sheff United so it can certainly work. I guess you could worry that it was the element of surprise and teams might work it out, but that's the same for all tactics.

You're right about needing the right players for the system, but then we need bodies full stop. I'm sure we'll get them. Bar the strikers we're not far off in terms of starting 11, but we do need a deeper squad.

bernie slaven would be worth 40 million these days. Best all round striker weve ever had. Left foot, right foot, head, volley, bend em in and most importantly tap in😉

This guy sounds a bit like sporar. Hopefully has a bit more to his game.
Have you honestly just claimed the Bernie Slaven is a better all round striker than Alen Boksic, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Mark Viduka, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Yakubu, Alvaro Negredo…

Anything that isn't "the norm" can have big positives and negatives. You could argue that defenders are used to playing against 1 striker so having 2 means they aren't sure how to defend against them.

I think for us though that the front 2 are there to press and defend from the front as much as they are there to score goals. We get plenty of players forwards at times, not just the 2 strikers so it's not like we're just lumping it up there to 2 isolated players. It also depends who is playing there. Last season Sporar and Connolly spent all of their time up front but Watmore and Balogun play out wide a lot. It's not as rigid as a fixed formation sounds.

If we can get Giles and Jones playing high up the pitch it'll be like 4 up front where other teams tend to have 3 which again defenders aren't experienced playing against. The big negatives are that it means we expect a lot from our wing backs at both ends of the pitch so if they don't have the fitness/stamina/discipline to attack and defend then you can be easily exposed.

I wouldn't be completely against signing him if he's going to be 3rd/4th/5th choice.

The fact that he made 39 appearances in a season for Brentford a few years back tells me that he must have offered them something, otherwise he wouldn't have made that many appearances. It was the same season they got promoted as well.

The stats are hardly amazing. His loan spell at hull is very much in the Connally bracket. Then again he could have got 10 in 13 and we'd still expect to 'ruin' him lol.

Although that's not writing him off as loans often don't bring out the best in a player.

He seems to have been a target for a while. We seem to be linked to many names from the past. I don't really know anything about him.

Trust the recruitment. Although on the subject of forwards its hard😉

Exactly this. It's different from loaning somewhere like Connelly or Balogun, this lad has decent championship experience and while he wasn't first choice, was definitely part of Brentford's first team squad and more than played his part in their promotion campaign.

If he was good enough to be Brentford's back up striker, he's probably good enough to be ours.
