David Armstrong, born this day 1954

He played 416 games between 1970-81, scoring 73 goals, only 3 of those games as sub
He started out at the Boro from the age of 9, signed as an amateur in 1968, an apprentice in June 1970 & a full time pro on new years eve 1971

Registered No490 when he made his debut as a 17 year out away to Blackpool April 1972

His amazing consecutive run of 356 games, league games, FAC, LC & 99% of pre season friendlies
Started his amazing consecutive run of appearences at home to Aston Villa on the 24th March 1973, just one day short of one year later in the 1st team he scored the only goal to clinch promotion to the 1st division, his consectutive run of games ended on the 6th September 1980, home to Nottm Forest

Got my Mum to sew on the black “11” on the back of my first ever Boro shirt. White band round the back. Everyone knew that was Spike‘s number, and the most iconic Boro shirt ever. As a right footed boy, I used to practise and practise using my left foot, cos I wanted to be just like him ❤️

thats when a band really was a band ... no these front only thingys
 
Good player when he decided to be , had many many non existent games and games where he’d be great for 60 mins then go sit somewhere for the last 30 .

that’s why England wasn’t keen
 
Spike was good and I was privileged to be around then but well beaten by Stuey Downing IMHO.
