Lumley is still a liability

Yes other players should have done better but come on though, a championship standard keeper has to be saving those kind of shots. He had a clear view and can see it all the way, the ball didn’t move that much and by the time he dives it’s past him. Very poor but what else can we expect? The club brought in two keepers in the summer who have always been second choice, it was clear neither is anywhere near good enough for a long time now but we didn’t replace them in January despite money being available
I strongly disagree.

Lots of posters moaning about Lumley not saving the second goal, so let’s pretend he made a spectacular save……..
we get beat 1-0.
we are still out of the cup by a team that I didn't expect Boro to beat.
😏

From where I was in the North Stand neither goal looked like an obvious keeper error. Watched the Premier League games on TV this week and there were several goals where the keepers could have done better - keepers don’t save everything!!

Nothing changes
I think he was more at fault for the first than the second, he wasn't brave enough, seemed to pull out of trying to block Lukaku's finish. It wasn't an out and out error, but he might have had a 2% chance of stopping it if braver....might have broken his fingers and had his season finished too

Second his weight was on the wrong foot, but that's because the ball looked like it would bend but then straightened out, It was a good shot, yes a top class keeper might have saved it, but I don't think it was an unforced error.

I was high in the NW corner, I knew the second goal was in as soon as it was struck, moved and dipped viciously, it was a hell of a strike. Strongly disagree that Lumley was to blame, he never stood a chance.

It does tell us he wasn't their no 1 and they're may be now more too come Cuthbert. He had improved this season and they're may still be improvement to come
Fingers crossed. I admire your optimism. You are right, he has improved a bit. To be fair some keepers develop late, so maybe that's the case here. However, I have a few friends who are QPR fans, and they say he was given numerous chances, but couldn't cut out the silly mistakes. At the QPR game when he passed the ball to one of their players for their second goal, they described him as the gift that keeps on giving. One of my mates couldn't believe we signed him to be first choice.

I have to admit though, that when you've got (QPR) mates chirping in your ear about how bad he is, it probably affects the fair balance - if you see what I mean.

The first goal was a result of a high press that did not come off. We over committed too high and Paddy was left exposed. It was a precision pass and an immensely clever finish by Lukaku tbf. I thought Fry was perhaps guilty of failing to stop the cross reaching Lukaku. No blame on Lumley

The second goal, again we lose the ball get caught out and Taylor was caught out positionally. The shot swerved and dipped significantly. I think for a split second Lumley had his weight on the wrong foot (perhaps anticipating a near post strike) and when he reacted it was difficult, could he have done better, possibly, but the blame truly lies with what went on much higher up the pitch and ill discipline from the midfield and defenders as Chelsea pulled players around losing our shape. He was left exposed by the outfield players more than anything and the gap that encouraged the shot was cavernous. It was not one individuals fault, but several really, Lumley had a fair game yesterday.

I still would like a new keeper come August, but the burden was elsewhere across the park. Sometimes we need to recognise class in the opposition and some of our current team are well short of Premier League quality. 0-2 was not embarrassing, Up front we lacked ideas and once again were over reliant on Jones.

To be fair I have seen Ziyech score a couple like that he hits the ball really early and always gets a bit of movement on it. He’s scored past better goalkeepers than Lumley with similar efforts, very good player. Agree Lumley had a fair game and to be honest seems to be in a good little vein of form. Hope he’s got some confidence now for the final push as we are gonna need him to keep it up

Good assessment, agree with all of that.

It's easy to be critical after any defeat, but that needs to be tempered by the quality of the opposition last night, plus its not a good measure to use when debating whether the current team, and players within it, are 'good enough' for the PL.

Chelsea are an exceptionally talented team and all in all we played reasonably well against them, but it was always going to be a step too far after the last two rounds I think.

Very u fortunate that after putting United and Spurs out the sporting gods decreed our task got ever harder and yes Chelsea were a step too far. The gap between the haves and have nots is too wide a chasm.

Lumley, not the best, not the worst but an important part of for squad.
We need everyone firing on all cylinders for another 12 games...

Today's was especially shocking.

He still needs replacing in the summer, whether we make the play-offs or not.

Lumley at fault today for the goal but you can tell posters were desperate to smash him by the amount of threads on him. We move onto Bournemouth.
