Lull in the new manager interest

I'm happy to go with Leo until the world Cup
I’d prefer to make a judgement after tomorrow to be honest. Excellent though it was and much needed Wednesdays win was all about emotion, sheer determination in keeping with the occasion and very average opposition. Let’s see how we perform tomorrow. I suspect the call to get the new man in will become evident or not with the result

I quite like Russell Martin, the Swansea manager. They seem pretty good at picking managers - Potter, Cooper and now Martin. Pretty good and Rodgers quite a while back. However since we are loathe to poach/compensate other clubs for a manager, probably unlikely. Although the table is tight, after a shaky start, they are up to sixth. Wood has played nearly every game too - who would have thought that?
Roberto Martinez before that too.

I think the fans recognise that the problems are running much deeper than the manager, so there’s no real enthusiasm for whoever comes in because it’s highly likely to be much the same. Either that, or their trust in Gibson to make the right choice is waining.

I wouldn’t be too surprised if Phil Neville gets a shout also as he’s been gaining rave reviews here in the US. Moreover the MLS season is just about to complete its season so Neville probably would be open to a move elsewhere.
Yes it did cross my mind that Neville & Rooney coming to the end of their season might be a factor.

There’s also about to be some musical chairs at the bottom end of the PL, could see Cooper, Gerrard and Rodgers out of their jobs shortly. When one goes the rest will.

We might be biding our time to see how the dust settles on that, someone good might end up being available.

Edit: and Hassenhutl.

I think some fans fail to recognise we are limited in what we can actually do. Teams with parachute payments can blow us out of the water.. there is a very limited pot for the calibre of players that are available and what we need to challenge the top six. Burnley and Celtic hoovered up a lot of the suitable talent.

The other option is finding cheaper foreign alternatives.. it’s a bigger gamble. Look no further than Andres Sporar and James Lea Siliki.. we went for Martin Payero and he was too lightweight for the division.

Not all transfers pay off. We didn’t gamble with cheaper Scottish players under Southgate.. when we did we ended up with the bloated SPL blaggers. We gambled in the prem with Karanka and it didn’t pay off (in football terms) we didn’t gamble with Monk and those players.. but we made too many poor decisions. Same with Pulis.

Played it safe with Woodgate, played it safe with Warnock and to some extent with Wilder.

Cooper signed an extended contract at Forest this morning according to Sky.

I don't even know what a good appointment would be anymore. I was over the moon with Wilder and thought he was exactly what we'd been waiting for but it all went to ***** like everyone else. Probably comes down to the quality of your players at the end of the day which is generally proportional to how much money you can spend on wages. With no parachute payments, anyone coming in is going to have to go some to get us promoted, particularly automatically.

I think the flaw with this argument is that most of our bad results this season have been against teams with significantly less expensive squads and wages.

But they are one off match ups between 2 teams without parachute payments so the gap is much smaller. Over 46 games the teams with parachute payments have an enormous advantage.

I posted something similar recently, Boro are just as prone to the pitfalls of underwhelming signings and flawed managerial appointments as any other team.

Wilder seemed a perfect fit, but it now seems that he was flawed for reasons that are not becoming clear.

But we're going in a different direction with a DofF, which I think will put us in a better position and we still have a relatively competitive budget, outside the teams with parachute payments.

A week in and not much to report. Some outlets report Carrick was at Rockcliffe last week but not the Gazette who’s silence and refusal to get involved in speculation makes me think they know exactly what’s going on but aren’t allowed to say so.

You'd hope the appointment will be today or tomorrow, to give the new man a bit of time to get them ready for Saturday.
