Luke Thomas' 2nd-half performance

Thought it was an encouraging performance from him 2nd half.

They managed to get in behind us a few times down the right side during the 1st half, but thought he was very solid in the 2nd half and showed a great bit of skill when he brought the ball down and turned past his man, setting up Greenwood for the chance.

Still not in favour of us signing him on a permanent deal but I think Carrick is going to play him in these remaining games, so that he has the opportunity to prove himself.

Their lad got round him for the free kick on the edge of the box didn't he?

Thought he was poor most of the game today, but had a few good moments in the second half, but nothing astounding, just the sort of play you'd expect from a competent footballer playing at our level.

*edit* reading back that sounds super negative, he was much improved, but still seemed to be targeted, that Brazilian lad breezed past him almost at will in the first half, and he still seems to try weird / stupid flicks down the line that go out of play which I'm not keen on. I don't think I've seen anything from him to suggest he's comfortably better than Engel.

I'm sure that for the extra year for Coulson, the fee and wage for Engel, the fee and wage for Bangura and the loan fee and salary for Thomas we could have just made an increased offer for Giles earlier in the window last summer and had a left back who we knew and fitted our system perfectly for the next three or four seasons.

Yeah Thomas was good today. Did a good job on his man. They tried to get it going down their right quite a bit but he was tight all game and got a few good tackles / blocks in.

I’m confused? Is he 5hite or not?
He's better than Coulson you'd think/assume, Bangura we've not seen enough of to decide, but he is definitely slower and more lightweight, and from every game I've seen him in so far he isn't better than Engel, who isn't amazing either.

You'd think with his CV / experience he'd comfortably be our best left back, the fact he isn't suggests he isn't worth a place with us long term.

Ayling, who I've been pretty critical of had an excellent game again, I think it is fair to say Thomas is nowhere near a past his best full back who came in on loan with no match fitness.

Yeah they did target him but I thought he stood up to the challenge well 2nd half, apart from when their lad got around him as you say and he pulled him back.

I do wonder if his recent game time is to see if he's an option for next season. I think he's out of contract in the summer?

Apparently he's been on Boro's radar for a few years. That was reported when we signed him. He has a lot experience for his age. Especially in the top flight.

You'd have to think that if he finishes the season ahead of Engel then we must have an eye on signing him. Why else would we start him?

Thought Thomas did ok today, but if I’m honest I’m still not seeing it?
He doesn’t look particularly quick? He got done a couple of times one on one, and on a couple of occasions he recovered well..doesn’t get forward enough, I would like to see him overlap a few times, get a few deliveries in…add a bit more to his game.

OBrien seems to be getting better by the game, won so many challenges and covered every blade of grass again..I would be looking to sign him if we can afford it.

I would give Ayling a year contract..but still look for a young powerful athletic RB.

I think Bangura is the best left back we currently have - can’t recall him costing us any goals when he’s played and he is super quick. I hope he can get some game time before the season ends

Some nice control on show from Luke today, by far his best performance in a Boro shirt.

On a related topic I liked the look of the Swans' RB Joshua Key, very lively and at 24 worth keeping an eye on I'd say.
He was excellent and stood out a mile.
