Ludicrous squad numbers on display tonight

Re Man City in 1974 he did. Alan Willey played Centre Forward that match and no Frank Spraggon.
Yes he played 90% plus of his time, after initially starting as CH, as a striker, I was merely saying that our legend Mr Middlesbrough did wear defensive shirts later in his career

I will check later today

I don't mind squad numbers, but don't think that teams should be allowed to have any gaps in the numbers at the start of the season.
Obviously players get sold/loaned, but I'd prefer it if there had to be a 'reset' every season - so that we have only got numbers going up to how many players are in the squad
That's how they do it in Spain

That to me is more offensive than squad number 97 or whatever. No striker should be wearing a number lower than 7 (and I'm not too happy about 7 and 8 either to be perfectly honest. Cantona and Ian Wright have a lot to answer for).
It's a subtle difference but i'd say a striker who drops off (Cantona, Jonh Hendrie for example) can very much wear no.7. An out and out striker shouldn't though.
On a related note it used to bug me that Paul Ince wore no.9 for us. A holding midfielder.

I can actually handle a central attacking player/striker wearing No7 but only if they’re a maverick. Le Tissier and Cantona get away with it. Slaven sort of does but not sure why really. I agree on the No8 but Wright is another maverick-type player who just about escapes criticism. When Arsenal signed Bergkamp he took the No10 off Merson, who became the No9. Now that is a travesty. Only a striker can wear No9. There are no questions about that.

Also on the No8, I think Hendrie wore it a few times for Boro and as an 8 year-old I thought it was fascinating that he was No10 one week but No8 the next. I have no idea why.

Farcical that Ince had the No9. The FA need to step in at times like that, IMO.

Liverpool started it all in the 70s, with Ray Kennedy wearing number 5 and Steve Heighway number 9

Didn't Ardiles wear the number one shirt in the World Cup in 82, coz it was all about alphabetical order?

Always thought it was daft at Spurs that Galvin the winger wore number 9 and Falco the striker wore 11. Why didn't they just switch?!

What about a system where they have multiple 1-11s with letters designating deputies for each position, i.e. 7a for reserve midfielder and so on?

Never mind Cantona and Wright, didn't Bernie Slaven wear No.7?

Yeah, Le Tiss was arguably an attacking midfielder/striker so he gets away with it. Suppose there's a case for Cantona too.

An out and out "old fashioned English style centre forward" should definitely not be wearing 7 though.

What about Lothar Matthaus wearing number 10 as a sweeper?

Mitigating circumstances given he spent most of his career as a midfielder, but still. Just looked wrong.

Yeah you're right. At least he was a defensive player but still, no.2 is strictly right back or perhaps right side of a back 3.
Dean Glover wore 2 for us ocassionally I think (I know it was usually Parky) and he played midfield. I’m sure Erimus will be able to confirm.
