Ludicrous squad numbers on display tonight

Manchester City have a No97 amongst their collection of young players tonight. Liverpool have a No84 at right back. The squads of the wealthiest clubs are absolutely monstrous. Would the authorities ever allow a team to go to a No100? That’s the burning issue. It might be like the years spent waiting for the clock in the top left corner of the screen to finally tick on to 100 minutes. It was almost unthinkable at one point but now happens quite often.

And some fans buy into too including many on here. Agreeing that players can't play twice in a week, or agreeing with playing weakened teams in cup competitions and that there should be two players for every position. How things have changed, David Armstrong played over 300 consecutive games, many players played for a full season, Liverpool used 16 players once when winning the league.

Things haven't really changed, the game is pretty much the same, it's just that attitudes towards it have and mainly because of money and fans get dragged along believing the new way is the only way. Not for me.

Revert back to No's 1 - 11 & stop all this nonsense

City had a 94 at centre back, 90 at centre mid and 97 on the bench. Pretty sure though they don’t have a squad of 97 players. They choose their favourite numbers these days.

Think of the poor kit man if he had to print 1-11 for the different squads each week. Not made of money these clubs you know :D

They may well have that amount.

We have 75 full time players on the books, 52 professionals and 23 U23/18 players
I don't mind squad numbers, but don't think that teams should be allowed to have any gaps in the numbers at the start of the season.
Obviously players get sold/loaned, but I'd prefer it if there had to be a 'reset' every season - so that we have only got numbers going up to how many players are in the squad

I thought they actually might be touching 100 players so had a quick look around. They've got 29 players involved with the senior squad at the moment and another squad full played at Doncaster in the EFL Trophy tonight as well. That's at least 47 players(presuming you have seven subs in that competition). If you look at their Wiki page for this season it says they currently have 34 players out on loan. That's 81 players on the books. It is remarkable really.

One last thing on this for this evening. I watched Athletic Club lose 2-1 at home to Rayo Vallecano on La Liga TV tonight and Radamel Falcao came off the bench to score the winner for Vallecano. He was wearing the No3 shirt. No3, FFS.

That to me is more offensive than squad number 97 or whatever. No striker should be wearing a number lower than 7 (and I'm not too happy about 7 and 8 either to be perfectly honest. Cantona and Ian Wright have a lot to answer for).

I used to care when football was football but in days when salaries aend inflated beyond obscene levels and at the same time clubs enter administration wily nilly to avoid their creditors? Well now I couldn’t really give a toss what number they wear.

Tney can wear Roman numerals on the back of their shirts for all I care.

Mr Middlesbrough wore No's2, 3, 5

He did but didn’t he play in defence then
Started off at CH as you know, fast forward to when he was established as our penalty king striker he actually played in a few games wearing No2 & No3

Off the top of my head he wore No3 at home to Man City in 1974, in a 3-0 win, again No2 away to Burnley in a 5-2 defeat, & his final season at the Boro he was mainly given the No12 shirt, but also wore No5 for a good few games

Re Man City in 1974 he did. Alan Willey played Centre Forward that match and no Frank Spraggon.
