Longer games in EFL

Why dont they just stop fannying about and have a timekeeper in the stands, with 2 x 30 minute halfs, with the clock stopped every time the ball is out of play.

The refs even under this initiative which will only last a few weeks as refs will just ignore it just like other laws of the game.
It sometimes takes 2 minutes to take a free kick around edge of penalty area which seems to just get ignored

You'd be there for hours

About time, especially given the ridiculous number of subs allowed these days. These substitutions are supposed to happen in tranches, but because of that daft electronic thing the fourth official needs to programme that’s not possible. Similarly any player on a winning side feels it necessary to clap his supporters and saunter off slowly.

It works in Ice Hockey.
3 X 20 minute periods.
The clock stops when play is stopped.
An hours play can last 90 minutes.
Period`s 1 and 2 have 15 minutes break at the end.
There has to be a winner.
Draws arent accepted.

Don't you think they should also consult paying spectators in this move.
Perhaps I am playing the devil's advocate but people have trains and transport to make. Could it potentially be a problem for some fans not knowing roughly when games will end?

American football's even worse. Bloody interminable.

Halle-fookin-lujah.

they have to do something otherwise there will be a legal class action called against them over their rules saying 90 minutes - and advertising of tickets at top dollar etc that claim 90 minutes - and games only being 77/80 minutes of the ball being in play.
It's actually closer to 65min in play time. This is a good move, but the it's all about the execution of it. For a possession passing side like us, it's only a good thing.

What about those games where we look like we're never going to score even if we played another fortnight?

"There will be an additional 11 minutes of OhMyGodMakeItStop time added on."
If Pulis was still in charge I would be dead against this new interpretation of the law

No. Because it would just be split. The majority of fans want value for money which means seeing more of what they paid for. A few people will have to get later transport. There is no way to keep everyone happy.

The purpose of these rule changes though aren't to make games longer, they are to change behaviour. Players time-waste because they aren't punished of it. We saw a t the world cup that the early games with loads of extra time got shorter as the tournament went on. Why bother wasting time if it's just going to get added on and you get punished for it.

In theory, like with most major issues in football, there is no need to change any rules. We already have all the rules in place but they are never enforced. If we just enforced the rules we have, like booking players for time-wasting, diving, feigning injury, talking back to the referee, encroaching at free kicks/corners/penalties etc then they'd stop doing it.

I am sick of seeing matches decided by teams "shithousing", and I hate the term and the way it is celebrated. I want to see football played properly and the memorable moments to be great goals, not funny ways a player conned a referee like a WWE match.

Nano: "A few people will have to get later transport. There is no way to keep everyone happy." (?!)
Presumably you dont use public transport to or from games, or live close enough to The Riverside to be "happy" extending game times?
You wouldnt mind if we kicked off half an hour early then, to keep everyone "happy"?

I think its a daft idea.
Earlier kick-off times - especially on night games would be useful.
Save paying for B&B or getting back at 01:00 (y)

Pretty perceptive from Boro - EFL announce longer games, a few days before Boro stick a £1.50 extra on the price of tickets to cover this........

I live nowhere near the Riverside so I wasn't including my opinion, just a general point.

Some games kick-off at 7:30, some at 7:45 and some at 8:00. I presume there are lots of people that are not happy about any of those times because of transport but the earlier ones will also have people not being happy due to finishing work on time etc. From the previous point, if I was to attend an evening game then the later the better for me because it gives me a chance of getting there after work but I'm not going to demand that because I recognise the current times suit the most people.

Forget about the time and go back to the the game in isolation. Then the discussion on what time is best for kick-off/full-time can be had. Is it better to have a game with more football or less football due to time-wasting? I know which side of that I'd be on. I want every game to have the same amount of time with the ball in play. I don't want teams to win/draw because they are better at time-wasting than others. I want to see what I've paid to watch and that is footballers playing football.

As you say if enforced properly it'll level out as players will stop doing it. Even in extreme cases it'll be no more than 15/20 mins added.

That happens sometimes anyway if there's a bad injury.

How close are people cutting it for getting their train? If you book a train ticket for ten past 5 or whatever you're pushing your luck anyway.

How do they cope with cup matches and extra time?

Does it cover deliberate time wasting though and how is that defined?

If it's a totally level playing field where time wasting is outlawed I don't actually have an issue with the exact amount of time going back on (for things like subs, goals etc).
