No it started with the proliferation of right wing authoritarians being pushed into power by foreign misinformation campaigns via social media.
It started with Trump, Brexit, Johnson, Cummings, Orban, Bolsanaro etc.
You can laugh it up Alvez, but there are examples of all of these breaking freedoms and pushing fascistic policies. As a brexiter, that's probably one that peaks you into laughing. However look at the signs of fascism, which is the strongest political action of reducing freedoms:
- Nationalism was undoubtedly and unashamedly weaponised
- immigrants and the EU were demonised and used as a unifying factor
- national security was used as a gain from brexit "secure our boarders", "plague of immigrants" "terrorists"
- they utilised mass media in a misinformation campaign, proven fact
- disdain for intellectuals and the arts "sick of experts", "london media elite" etc.
- fraudulent elections, they were found guilty of breaking rules, and that's before you get into the misinformation, stolen facebook data, and format of the vote etc.
So yes, brexit is a great example of the proliferation of authoritarianism and therefore the removal of our freedoms, regardless of what you feel about the EU.
