Liz Kendall says some people on sickness and disability benefits are ‘taking the mickey’

And that, in a nutshell, describes everything that's wrong with capitalism.

Work is the very opposite of the "nature of life". Forcing people into meaningless jobs just to then pay them so little that they can't afford the basics of a decent life is a very good reason for youngsters to decide that the system isn't going to work for them.
Agreed.

She needs to talk to workers, not bosses.

Ridiculous minister from a ridiculous government.

Forcing people into meaningless jobs
What is a meaningless job?

Surely sitting at home doing nothing with your life is meaningless?

Nobody is forced to work but the Government should not be ‘forced’to pay people anything if they have shown no intention of working

I have had in the past what I’m sure you would describe as being a meaningless job, I got paid for doing it and paid tax.I should have followed your advice and Sat at home working out home to claim more benefits.

Maybe just maybe working 40 plus hours a week and still been skint makes people ill

Think about it
This is a really good point.

Much of the increase is connected to mental health, the government (again both colours) need to take some responsibility for how much mental health has suffered - much of it because of the cost of living crisis that they have done nothing to address.

They have to do better.

Ask David Graeber (metaphorically of course as he died in 2020 - RIP).

Introduce a Universal Basic Income that actually provides enough for people to invest their time creatively.

Give people the opportunity to fail and allow them to express themselves. Anyone wanting to press buttons in a lift for a living would still be able to do that. You wouldn't have somebody being forced to do that for 8 hours a day just to pay rent when they could be writing a best-selling novel or weaving baskets etc.

The very idea that claiming benefits is somehow negative is a big part of the problem as it's a right-wing narrative.

People who are skint will spend every penny in local shops etc.

Rich people with extra cash will just stick it in the bank.

Option 1 is better for the economy

The worst thing about Liz Kendall’s statement is that it meant the Labour Party chose to attack supposed benefits scroungers on the very same day that Donald Trump decided to. Nasty little fascist nut job. I leave it to you to decide which of the individuals that should be applied to.

I personally want to live in a country that supports its citizens. Free education, health care and financial support for those who need it. That is the mark of a reasonable nation. Let’s never head the way of the Americans.

Specifically on benefits. Do people think those receiving them just stick in their bank and get it working for them? Absolutely not. Benefits are spent on basic necessities mainly. It is a form of economic activity and part of the mythical growth that modern society bangs on about.

I’ve never read such ridiculous rubbish for a long time
Utopian balderdash

Exactly. So the payment hasn't been cancelled at all then.
You have to "qualify" for pension credit and the average wait time for a decision is over three months [BBC].
The number who qualify for Winter Fuel Payments [Max £300] has fallen by 10M to 1M eligable.
Political decision, not financial.
