it was illegal to do so whilst in the EU.

Strategic Industry was how the Italians qualified as far as I remember.

Labour hiding behind the EU rules was a huge factor in both the loss of Redcar and Brexit.

Remember when it finally closed was because Cameron vetoed tariffs on Chinese steel by the EU that was being dumped on the world market as he wanted them to fund Hinkley Point.

Tees Valley's top office retires amid restructure
Julie Gilhespie, Group Chief Executive of TVCA and STDC (Image: TVCA)
The way decision-making powers on Teesside are structured have come under intense scrutiny in recent months because of the controversy over the way the huge Teesworks regeneration project was run (and who benefited).
And one of the senior local government figures at the centre of the row, Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) group chief executive Julie Gilhespie (pictured), is now retiring as her role is axed as part of a 'restructure'.
In documents seen by the Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Hodgson, a “revised senior management structure” is proposed “in response to the group chief executive’s declared intention to retire from the organisation within the next 12 to 18 months.”
As well as being chief executive of TVCA, Ms Gilhespie also had the top job at the South Tees Development Corporation (the body set up to regenerate Teesworks) and was a director of Teesworks Limited (the joint venture set up with two local businessmen) until this month.
The top jobs at TVCA and STDC will now be separated, in a move officials say “will assist in managing any perception of conflict of interest between the roles”.
As Daniel reports, the reference to a “perception of conflict of interest” almost mirrors the wording used in the Teesworks review published in January which found no evidence of corruption at the former steelworks but did identify a host of governance failings.
It is not clear who will become TVCA chief executive but a man called John Barnes is the chief operating officer at STDC and likely to be regraded as chief executive of STDC.
In the Teesside Lead newsletter, Leigh Jones looks at Mr Barnes' background in the private sector and his links to Chris Musgrave, one of the businessmen whose role in the Teesworks joint venture has come under scrutiny.

Getting away with it...
