Little Ben Houchen & British Steel

I am aware of what caused Turley's loss and stated on this thread that the number one issue was Brexit.

I am also aware who they voted in 2010 again that is irrelevant to the point I made and you are conflating issues.

The fact is the decimation of the steel-works had very little to do with Labour and the electorate blaming them is because of short term memory and propaganda.
I agree the problem stated under the Tories but Blair had 13 years to do something.
Thats a long time to claim they had very little effect.

13 years to do what? The industry was privatised and decimated! What did you expect Labour to do? The industry was ruined already by the Tories, Labour did not destroy the industry no matter how hard you try and rewrite history.

But thats is exactly the point they didn't do anything, the steel works were not decimated in 1997 it was still making a profit well into the early naughties. The rot had set it I agree but Labour did nothing to help the business. Just because its in private hands doesn't mean governments cant help with investment in the way grants.

I think you forget the state of the UK when Labour took over.

Hospital and schools in a horrible state, Labour had to invest billions in infrastructure and public services that the Tories had neglected (much like they have this time around). The steel industry was very low on the priority list given the huge task they faced after the Tory fire sale of our assets and under investment in public services and infrastructure.

Your argument has no substance to it and reeks of straw clutching.

Thatcher destroyed our steel industry not Blair.

The steel works where decimated by 1997 a very quick search to how small the industry was from the decade previous when it was privatised will show that. You are clutching at straws here.

She won't.
Turley has been very active in the Teesport stuff and worked with Private Eye amongst others. It is amazing how people seem to think she offers nothing for our area, she stayed here despite losing her seat and still campaigned for our area as a non-politician during Youngs tenure.

How about writing to her and asking her opinion and what actions she will take before disparaging her?

The response of our Labour MPs.

As an aside, just got to say that I hate "Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool".
It's something Houchen constantly uses too.
If we're going to have a Mayor of the Tees Valley, actually use that as the name.

2010 was when Tata walked away from Teesside and the blast furnace was mothballed.

I'm not clutching at anything I'm telling you why people didn't vote for Vera Baird in 2010.
If you lived in Redcar at the time pretty much everyone had either family or friends who worked at the works. She lost her seat because those who would vote for labour through thick or thin felt so let down by the Labour Party they actually voted for a lib dem to be there MP.
These people wouldn't get influenced by propaganda it was there daily life.

You have even said yourself that the steelworks were not a priority.
That's hardly a comfort to someone who relies on there job to pay the mortgage.

I did not disagree that is why she lost her seat. What I disagree with is your characterisation of Labour being in any way at fault for the destrcution of our steel industry.

And what I said it was low on the list of priorities after things like health and education. the country was in a state after 15 years of Tory mismanagement, making sure we had functioning hospitals, schools and more housing had to come first especially given steel was a private enterprise and our public services where wrecked. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few and the industry was already in a death spiral because of Thatcher and the companies that bought the assets.

Thatcher killed our steel industry not Blair.

ANd to say people dont get influenced by propaganda in daily life is so wrong its almost comical. See the Brexit vote for a recent example!
