Linthorpe Road Cycle Path

Southfield Rd is a fantastic space now. It links up the Uni, the areas outside the pubs are far better and there is a big open space with an outdoor screen. The Uni are spending £300m on that area on new buildings and nobody misses the road.
When is any of it used. Never seen the screen used. They could use space for concerts but that's not happened yet.
As for the road have you tried getting across town recent in a vehicle.

'Linthorpe Rd isn't the only route into town'

I'm pretty sure you are on a wind up now like. We are discussing the impact on the businesses ON Linthorpe road which currently have parking outside which will be REMOVED to make way for the cycle lane.
I'm talking about the over reliance of motor vehicles in this country. Things that are common all over Europe seem impossible here.

It's packed when the Uni is open and yes I have driven across town and have never missed Southfield Road.

I'm sure the council will have done some kind of survey or assessment to find out who is using the parking spaces. Seems to be mainly used by the people who actually work in the shops rather than customers. The spaces are always full and cars don't seem to move away. Shouldn't really make much difference if this is the situation. Perhaps the council is trying to make the roads safe for all users.

Parking is proposed behind the shops where the open wasteland space is. It’s simply removing on street parking to off street away from shop fronts. It’s the same old people condemning progress. Who even parks on Linthorpe Road? It’s not as though you have a shopping spree while there. It’s take away delivery vehicles using them as short stay. People using the restaurants aren’t all parking on linthorpe road as there simply isn’t the existing space.

think about it before coming in here all teary eyed. It’s a good job the council rarely listen to the big babies we have living here

'Open wasteland space' where is this land that you speak of ?

I cant see the point of a cycle way down Linthorpe Road, why would any discerning cyclists want to ride into town on their £500+ bikes to do ....what?
The same reason as the poor hard done to motorist: shop / Cinema / Coffee / Boro..... but without clogging both sides of the road and filling peoples lungs with carbon monoxide.
Might help reduce obesity and heart problems by encouraging the drivers to use their feet to walk on instead of their arz.(y)

Or maybe people just use it for leisure cycling... does there need to be a reason for someone to be out on a bike and using a cycle lane?

Are you for real? Have you never been along Portman Street or the former Pearl Street, Amber Street and all the old streets of Princess Road? Do you like on Teesside otherwise you would know this.
Gresham was demolished between Princes Road and Borough Road. Portman Street is still fully built up - the jewel streets have gone but there is a new car park now to the rear of Linthorpe Road between Crown and Psyche.

Oh dear - a dirty concrete barrier on stilts is built through the town to speed the poor motorist to the next raffic jam - undernewath sit unoccupied shops and the whole area looks completely run down. The northern area of the town is virtually cut off.
Try using a bus - or buy a bike - or walk - or get the train......

So there is parking availability behind the shops then? Thanks for confirming Rob.

I don't think that even taxi drivers have missed Southfield Rd since it was pedestrianised and the area is 100 times more attractive now.

We will see way more of this over the next ten years, we have to change attitudes towards car usage and things like this can only help. Move shops to out of town locations and make the town centres more pedestrian friendly and not just a big car park causing pollution.
Peoples attitudes towards this needs changing though before things can ever change. Sure some people would fly to the shops if it meant saving five minutes

I don’t know if it’s improved as it’s awhile since I’ve had to get a bus, but when I use to live on Trimdon Avenue there was one bus every 20 minutes during the day, then from about 5pm it became once an hour. The amount of times the bus just didn’t show up for some reason was ridiculous. Walking to town from there wasn’t practical either.
As soon as I learnt to drive I stopped getting the bus anywhere as it was just too inconvenient.

After 5pm those areas become a different place , not somewhere people will feel at ease or even confident their car will be un touched .
Have you had a stroll down Parliament Road at night ? I doubt it .

I’d feel a lot more sympathy towards some of these business owners if they could be arsed to maintain their premises. Disgusting inside and out. Rat infestations rife. Little, grease and generally poor maintenance.

I’m sure a few street lights and CCTV would help that.

I’m a parliament road native originally so yes I have been down there at night.
