Let's be honest about that team selection

I've been ruminating about this for the past 5 minutes:-

Barlaser Hackney
Forss Crooks. McGree
Rogers

Let's deconstruct briefly
We have a no 10 playing CF
A CF playing Right wing
And a CM / Tree playing number 10

Why?! It's painfully unbalanced

Barlaser Hackney
McGree/Jones Rogers McGree/Silvera
Forss

Immediately we have balance with the tools we have, we have pace and movement in their correct positions. If some random internet idiot (me) can see this, why did Carrick and the team not? The worrying thing is, he's had that top setup throughout pre-season.

Forss is excellent on the right but in the absence of a striker he has to play up front. We have enough options to play on the right in the short term.

Forrs played the wide right position brilliantly last season so you can see why he wants him out there but I agree he should be centre forward when we have no one else available. Should have gone wing backs i think with Jones and McGree and Fry Lenihan and McNair as back three

I think its more to do with the fact that last season when we where flying when carrick come inn, we had

Forss Akpom Mcgree
Crooks

Scoring goals winning games, unfortunately the tempo has dropped and with that goes confidence, I agree that it would seem better to have put Forss through the middle but Carrick has keot his team as consistent as he can and at the minute he is coming unstuck, is it tactics, players etc, when where not winning it all becomes easy to pick wholes, hopeully he can get players back as just mixing the team up and having howson and chuba in there chnaging the dynamic of that team, the problem is no one is really staking a claim for any position.

For me I would of played Jones at RB he has played there overlaps well at times and with Forss while smith and dijksteel are injured might of been the best option.

Again if he doesnt trust coulson play Mcgree their and put Silvera on the wing, even though Mcgree is not a LB.

There are so many differnet alternatives this team could set up as, carrick isnt one for knee jerk reactions and wont throw players under the bus so I would expect unfortunately we may see the team line up similar to saturday in the next few to try and build confidence in the group again.

For me tomorrow should be another game he plays his decided / available best team minus any weakness he seen on saturday to try and build the relationships and understanding between the new players.

Forss plays the wide right position position well when we are playing against a team that leaves a lot of space behind. Against teams that sit deep he's not effective because we need him to be a creator and he just isn't. It's like having Stuani out wide again.

Crooks is another player who gets on the end of things. As a 10 he should be creating but he's not.

We have struggled, even last season when we were playing well, against teams that sit deep. We really need to have a plan b for these types of teams otherwise all teams are going to play that way against us because they know it's effective.

Wouldn’t start jones, don’t understand how anyone remotely rates him silvera and rogers on the flanks payero in behind forss

It would be far from knee jerk considering our goal scoring ability has disappeared since April but I totally agree with you that he's not going to change it.
It's a worry with Carrick for me, either he doesn't believe in formations (standard with 'progressive' managers) or he doesn't want to let his players he's bonded with down because he's a good stand up man.

For most of those matches before Archer signed it was Forss up front and Jones on the right for Carrick's first dozen matches or so. Only the last 3 or 4 did Crooks start up front.

But your point stands (particularly when Akpom is fit), we still have the same front 4 available that won 9 out of 12 before Archer and Ramsey signed.

Exactly. Possibly two things though.
1) is that we had a certain surprise factor for the first run of games. Initially it was Jones right and Forss up front but as Jones lost form, he was replaced with Crooks.
2) we were basically playing 3-2-5 in attack and our main tactic was Giles-Akpom-boom.

Without Giles and Akpom and without the surprise factor plus lack of pace we ended up, bit by bit, with a dysfunctional front line that lacked pace, width, creativity and finishing. It was probably the worst team selection that Carrick has made since he took over. He's a rookie manager in what is probably the most chaotic league in Europe facing his first real struggle with injuries, run of bad results and squad gaps; you expect mistakes. It's what happens next that matters.

Yep Giles was really important. Not just the assists but to our shape as well. I think they hope Coulson can do the same job, similar type of fullback. I personally just don't think he's anywhere near good enough, but would be delighted to be proven wrong. We're surely pushing for a new attacking left back though.

Agree it's a test for Carrick. Patience will be needed I think. No-one wants a slow start, but given our injuries along with gaps in the squad I think it's inevitable unfortunately. I'm confident he'll come through it mind.

Jones has never played right back in his life, he’s played right wing back but that’s completely different
Its no different to playing giles on the left hes got very similar attributes. Lots of players become fullbacks after starting further forward in their professional career. He couldn't be any worse than McNair

The bench was strong, the team was weak. If they weren't fit enough to do 15 mins at the end, they shouldn't have been on the bench.

Our first team has to have Forss right and Silvera left. If we can get Akpom and Howson starting the team will be fine. Carrick will not select Jones if he has any sort of alternate available and people putting Jones in a Carrick first 11 for a EFL game must have blanked the last 8 months or so from their memory? He didn’t even make the bench most games.
