Lens pull out of Akpom deal

I think the minimal interest in Akpon says a lot. He scored a huge amount of goals despite missing a few games but ultimately is a one season wonder, getting £10m + for him in his final year of contract is a great deal. Very much a confidence player with niggling injuries creeping in, last year may be the pinnacle of his playing career.

Very similar to Brereton-Diaz last year. I was surprised no Prem teams took a chance on him, and same this time with Akpom, where it looks like there was only ever really interest from Sheff United, who will most likely be playing in the Championship this time next year.

He was told to find another club last summer only the fact wilder didn't get 'his man' and we had no proven strikers on the books so he was given 'a chance'

Last season may have been a flash in the pan. If Alves can look like a superstar in the dutch league then I'm sure Chuba will score a bag full of goals too

To go from who wants him for free to a £10m+ deal is a good turn around for MFC. We were all breathing a sigh of relief when it was rumoured where ever he was on loan at (PAOK) were prepared to offer us almost the fee back we originally paid for him until the deal fell through

Literally couldn't give a flying F about this saga anymore.

It's damaging the team for this to be dragged out. Get rid and get a replacement in.

I think you are being disrespectful to Ajax there, they have been European Champs more times than even Man U.
Up until last year, Celtic, Steau Bucharest and Red Star Belgrade all had been European Champs more times than Man City, that's a flimsy argument.

Ajax haven't been a European force for decades.

Reports that Sheffield United "baulked" at the price of over £10M for Chuba.
Not surprising they are fighting a rearguard battle already - got rid of any decent players they had and trying to back-fill to survive.
Allegedly they are trying for Archer [!].
Not a chance.
If we can afford him - hope we get him, though it appears unlikely.

yes fair comment there is a bit of new money around these days but I was more comparing Ajax with Lens, the Geordie team from France.

Agreed, I think we’ve got more Ch since of getting him than them if they couldn’t afford 12m for Akpom then they can’t afford the 14+ for archer

We don't know who is pushing the Chuba Akpom deal, some posters think its Chuba, it maybe but it could be MFC or Chuba's agent or a combination.

I saw a man possessed at times last season, but happy where he was.

Not many championship strikers get bought by PL clubs. Unsurprisingly, most high scoring strikers end up getting promoted to get their chance of playing in the PL. In the list linked here I think going backwards it is only Watkins, Vydra and Wood that have been bought by a PL club after being top scorer in the championship. Watkins was the only one of those 3 that have done well. Doesn't seem like golden boot winner is a great indicator of being snapped up by a PL team.

If you look at this list which includes all high scorers, not just the golden boot winner then there really aren't many that have been bought by a PL team and been successful.
