Middlesbrough are interested in Sheffield Wednesday's Lee Gregory after the Owls missed out on promotion from League One... with Derby and Wigan also keen on the striker

Middlesbrough are showing an interest in Sheffield Wednesday striker Lee Gregory.

The 33-year old narrowly missed out on promotion from League One last week after Wednesday were beaten by Sunderland in the play-offs.

The former electrician, who used to play in the same Halifax side as Leicester's Jamie Vardy, still managed to turn in some lively performances during the campaign and ended the season with 17 goals in 39 games.

Gregory has one year left on contract so Wednesday are not expected to ask for a large fee.

Gregory's former club Derby County plus newly promoted Wigan Athletic are also interested in the forward who finished the season with a flourish and won the EFL Player of the Month for April after scoring nine goals in Wednesday’s final ten games.

During his previous spell with the Rams last season, he made 11 appearances and scored three goals.

Wayne Rooney's side are preparing for life in League One following their relegation and the addition of Gregory would be a bonus due to his experience in the league.

Gregory spent a large chunk of his career playing in non-league before finally making the jump to the Championship in 2014 when he joined Millwall.

He moved to Stoke City in 2019 and joined Wednesday in a permanent move in August last year.

If true then he’s Clearly Wilders Plan B centre forward. Not likely to be a starter.

I'm pretty sure we were linked when he left Stoke on a free. After his loan at Derby.

I mean why wait a year. Unless we wanted him to have a season in league 1 first 😂

He was decent for a few years at Millwall. I'm really not sure he's what we need now. Especially at 33.

I would imagine we will be after 3 forwards due to the amount of rotation used. I wouldn’t be against him coming in for a season and to be fair he wont do any worse than what we had last year. We need someone with a bit of strength up top. Can be a bit of a 5hithouse as well so thats another bonus.

I think that ship has sailed with Lee Gregory I’m afraid to say. I remember when we walloped Millwall 5-1 at the Den I said at the time we should have got Gregory then as he was on the up. However, even though I would say that he’s still decent, surely there’s better.

Please for the love of God no. Only other side's linked are newly promoted chsmpionship and recently relegated Derby.
Really wouldn't get the buzz of a promotion challenge going 😂

I wouldn't fancy Greogry but to be fair I'd have Marvin Johnson back. He assisted Gregory for the goal against Sunderland.

He's only 31 and would be perfect for our system. I thought he did well playing as a WB under Warnock and would have finished the season with double figures in assists if it hadn't been for him getting covid and losing his place.

I thought we were trying to get out of this division?

Agree on Marvin Johnson — we made a mistake on letting him go.

I`m lead to think its bullship - he`s too old and past his bedtime.
Lazy journo time - but you never know.
