And why is that even legal?
because customers without direct debits lead to more debt activity which costs them money, especially in winter when usage is higher. Being on direct debit doesn't mean you pay more a some providers charge you for what you've used and some so fixed DD's and some give an option but essentially DD payers are more likely to pay so cost less to service the account than that who pay on receipt of bill. That's why many companies in many industries give discounts for debits.

350 quid a month ?
poll tax all over again. If that dont pay crowd gathers momentum it will bring down the government of the day. And we have that internet thingy to coordinate such things as opposed to 1989

They need to redistribute the profits of BP/Shell etc

A barrel of oil is currently 9125 $ A fall of around 30 % from not so very long ago. Dont see much evidence of that fall leading to cheaper energy prices

first step should everyone to cancel DDs and for the government to bring in a law that disallows reductions for DD payers. (which in reality is a surcharge on non DD payers)
Its just two tier pricing and should be illegal

Yep. My question was why is it legal not for an explanation of the economics. I know it is cheaper for the suppliers but they are penalising lower income people who are most likely unable to pay by direct debit.

My mum and dad are going to spain for 4 or 5 months soon as the cold hits. Said it be cheaper and warmer. They are retired mind and have an apartment over there. Some arent as lucky

I work with a lot of families already on or near as you can get to the breadline. Loan sharks already operate within the area and the heating has been used sparingly for years as it is. The kids often sleep in clothes and coats at night during the winter.

One change I would predict is that some people will seek cash in hand work to save paying any taxes, in turn render incomes low enough for any support possible and hopefully have enough left to top up the energy meters.

I’ve started to see more comments along the lines of well people will have to don without their mobile or Sky TV and got me thinking about what is luxury and what is essential in the 21st Century? I would say broadband coverage is an essential in this day and age and when did we start to live in a country whereby people are pilloried for having a mobile phone or wanting to watch TV???

It seems to me it is all part of a let’s blame individuals rhetoric that this government thrives upon.

Yep, 90 days in any 180 is the maximum.
I don't know their situation and if they have proof of funds maybe they can stay longer.

I was tongue in cheek insofar as by Xmas we will probably in a trade war with the EU and the TCA and any other agreements will probably have been binned.
