Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid

I repeat. He kicks a football. That is it. My wife is paid zero for trying to help Lions in Zambia and Zimbabwe survive.

But you know that isn't a worthwhile comparison.

Football generates huge turnovers as millions/billions of fans watch (and pay to watch) meaning that the vast wealth generated goes to it's biggest stars. Like when pop concerts and movies in cinemas generate huge pots of money and the biggest share goes to the main stars.

As wonderful a thing as your wife is doing, it doesn't generate large pots of money by being a paid entertainment and so there isn't large amounts to pay her. But you get that.

He has been clever though Mbappe.

If he went to Real Madrid while still in contract they would have had to pay a world record transfer fee but paid him less wages. Now his contract has ran out at PSG he will still get his move but on a free transfer and demand more wages.

I can see lots more top players seeing out their contracts in the future to get more wages at their next club.

He got £150m signing on fee
His wages are on top of that

It turns my stomach

Meanwhile people who work in the medical profession who save lives on a daily basis are having to strike because of poor pay.
How did we come to a situation so absurd.

Because millions (into billions all told) watch football and pay to do so generating (globally) massive wealth for the sport of football. The lions share of the vast riches generated go to the players and, in this instance, arguably the worlds biggest star.

People saving lives in the medical profession are paid from a pot that people often aren't as keen to pay into.

I know plenty who love tax cuts and moan about tax increases (that pay for those medical staff) but will happily pay £100's per month for football.

I don't have a problem with top players earning fortunes per se: the game generates billions, and they are the talent: the very few in the world who can play the game at that level. I'd rather they get the money than the "investors".

That said, wages and prices seem to be caught in an ever-upwards spiral. I'm not always sure which drives which now: do prices go up because of player wage demands, or do wages go up due to the ever increasing revenue coming in to the game?

On the whole, I think it's the latter: I find it hard to believe PL owners would suddenly go back to 2 PL matches on TV a week and £20 tickets if all players suddenly got a 75% wage cut: they'd just pocket the profits. However, once top clubs start paying higher wages, everyone else has to increase income to have a chance to compete.

He’s actually taken a pay cut to join Real, poor lad.

(Not including his £120m signing on fee, paid over 5 years)

Makes you wonder, why do Barcelona not have two pennies to rub together, but RM can make signings like Mbappe?
