Kalvin Phillips

Phillips is surely in too deep a rut of bad form to persist with.
I'd like to see England go with either Alexander-Arnold or Stones in there, depending on quality of opposition. It would give some more tactical flexibility too, as they could switch between a back four and five. Or against the lesser teams playing a low block, pick an additional attacking midfielder and have Stones step into midfield leaving a back three when we have the ball.

One option would be to play Bellingham in the central midfield role with Rice, and then Foden as a 10/central attacking midfielder.
Gallagher has been very good for Chelsea despite their poor season, he'd be a better option than Phillips.
As would Barkley or Mainoo.

Think Philips and Henderson will both make the squad, the moves they made on January for Southgate are probably more about fitness than form. He’s stuck with a fair few players when they’ve been in poor form at club level.

I'd have Rice and Stones as the two sitters, with Konsa and Maguire at CB. Play them together in the 4 friendlies leading up to the tournament and give them the opportunity of building an understanding with one another.

I'd take Rice, Mainoo and Henderson as the 3 midfielders. Phillips should be nowhere near it.

I have been banging on about Barkley all season he has been brilliant definitely worth considering

Southgate is the football equivalent of Rishi Sunak , hasn't got a clue what he's doing. Believe me , only an injury to either of them will stop them being on the plane in June.

Absolute and complete nonsense. Is factually England's best manager in 60 years. England were a complete laughing stock when he took over, a shambolic, disharmonious, embarrassing joke. Since then we've had the best seven years as a team in living memory. Some fans deserve Fat Sam.
Comparing someone as thoroughly decent and genuine as Southgate to a complete slimy amoral toad like Sunak is daylight nobbery of the highest order also.

Phillips has been utter turd, the last few months at Leeds he was garbage after coming back from injury. Since he went to City he’s never looked right and now looks sh1te at West Ham. Should be nowhere near the squad, we have a few far more deserving of a place than him.

How has Henderson been doing at Ajax ? Anyone know? He looked dreadful in his last couple of England games after playing in the money league. Hard to tell whether it was further decline in his ability or just lack of a good standard of football. I expect Henderson is nailed on to go if fit, I don’t agree with it but it’s Southgate’s choice. I just hope he doesn’t take both and waste 2 spaces in the squad on his underperforming favourites.

With the players available we should have won a trophy by now , overly defensive and predictable.

I hear this from the English all the time. You’re no better than the likes of Spain, Italy, France etc.

Foden, Saka, Kane, Bellingham, Rice, Grealish. All top players.

But in the heart of defence you have John Stones, Harry McGuire and then Jordan Pickford in goal.

It’s imbalanced. Southgate knows this.

I think it's a mentality issue with the English players. We were all over France 2nd half and should have at least taken it to extra time but you just knew Kane was going to miss the 2nd penalty.

I wouldn't be against Barkley being selected ahead of Henderson but I think Southgate will want to stick with his principle of playing defensive minded midfielders in the two sitting roles.

Barkley has played in a deeper role for Luton this season but would he be disciplined enough to play how Southgate would want him to play?

It's a big reason why he has overlooked Ward-Prowse, despite his form being impressive for several seasons.

Who have all won in major tournaments relatively recently btw.

I get people like to slag off England on here but the fact is we do have a great squad filled with world class players.

We now have the best pool of players I can ever remember. We haven't in previous tournaments though maybe.
