Kalvin Phillips 😒

I've watched his England performances and I can use one one word to describe them - anonymous.
I'm not seeing this so called Andrea Pirlo style at all.

As above, Philips is rarely going to be "eye catching" in that role - it's only the top, top players who you tend to notice playing DM (Kante, Rodri, Howson ;) ) Think first choice for that role is probably Rice.

I actually don't think Philips is a bad player but we need to be wary of selecting Leeds players imo. They've been drilled in such a specific way under Bielsa it's probably difficult to incorporate them into another style.

He can’t inspire our players or pick the correct team
Don't be daft man, he has a 60% win rate, one of only 3 managers to get us to a world cup semi, and got us to fourth place in the nations league.

In qualifiers and competitions:

W:23 D:6 L:8, a 62% win rate in competitive games.

We have beaten Spain, Croatia and Belgium and draw with Croatia.

There aren't any disasters in here, the only competitive defeats are against top 5 teams other than a loss to Denmark and Czech and they're top 16 sides
2018s: Belgium, Croatia, Spain
2019: Netherlands, Czech
2020: Denmark, Belgium, Denmark

His tenure has been very good it's been a transition stage, a move away from physical football into a more technical and tactical football. A move away from the old guard of Rooney and Hart, and the recently retired Lampard and Gerrard. Those guys probably played for too long which meant once retired we ended up with players that had missed out on 3 or 4 years of international football. The squad he inherited had very little experience and is now full of players that are still 4-5 years away from their prime, yet are extremely competitive against the best sides in the world. To get the results he has while changing style, tactics, and personnel is remarkable. This squad can keep improving over the next 3-5 years when I think it will peak.

Philips, I'm not sure he has the passing range for that role, it's not just about being the wave breaker, but you need to be the one to instigate attacks through good quality passing

@BoroMart whilst I agree with your sentiment regarding the potential your stats don't show the true picture.

The world cup semi run in particular in hindsight was an absolute gift. I'd even go as far to say it was poor in-game management in the Croatia game that stopped us from making it to the final.

I remember watching it in a packed theater / bar and everyone could see the counter tactic had been totally nullified before half time. We didn't address it and were getting outplayed long before the equaliser.

HE failed in that game, but he and the team were still learning, but lets not kid ourselves, that was a very talented croatia team, it was always going to be tight one way or another and a few key moments cost us.

Southgate has too many favourites who aren't, and never will be, anywhere near international standard - James, Dier, Coady, Lingard, Pickford for a start
Really, I mean how many of those players do you think will start the next international against Poland or start the next euro finals game? I'm not sure any of them will. Dier is only in the squad as a utility player, and Coady only due to lack of CB options (who would you pick in teh squad instead?). Lingard has only just returned to the squad after 2 years out and Pickford doesn't let England down.

This is a crackingly good point (y)

I agree ; but Southgate can't inspire players to get more out of them which is what is required at this level to get to the latter stages even ; southgate proved in the last world cup he and his staff are stumped when world class teams change tactics ; southgate was left scratching his head ; because he isn't suited to this role. He is a trevor brooking type character and no more. That's where he will end up.

My point is that they are always in the squad, because they are his favourites -
Lingard was rightly dumped when he couldn't get a game for Man U reserves, but a couple of games for WH and he's back in again
Dier doesn't get a regular game for Spurs
Pickford (as has been proven at Everton) is an accident waiting to happen
James - well, words just fail me
Coady - a journeyman - who would I pick instead ? Well personally Keane from Everton who appears to be right back in form, but as per my first line, my point is about him picking favourites

Lingard is in the squad because Maddison, Barnes and Graelish are all injured.

Who else would you pick ahead of him right now?

Reece James is the third choice right back, he was given a game against San Marino, don't see the issue there at all.

Pickford has never made a mistake for England, and has helped them win 2 penalty shootouts. His form at Everton is sometimes questionable, but even when he was poor there he was still playing well for England.

I think you are mixing personality with capability and knowledge

exactly and James is young and improving week by week. TAA has been poor this season and Walker and Trippier can't play forever. Lamptey might have been ahead of James if he was fit.

Pickford is crucial to England playing from the back too. His range of passing is brilliant and far better than any other English keeper.

As for Southgate. He took over following abject failure, recognised that England were their own worst enemy and has worked to eradicate that. He's also the first England Manager since 1996 to oversee a penalty shoot out win. That wasn't luck either and he worked hard at it.

I don’t see the point of playing someone like him against San Marino, they offer nothing going forward.

I guess you play your game and don't make changes based on the opposition. I think he'd get pelters inf he picked a really defensive lineup against strong opponents: inviting them on to us etc...

We set too much importance to hammering minnows. If that was really important, you'd be best of going unrelenting long ball. Pick a load of big lads and keep bombarding the penalty area, you could probably double the number of goals we scored last night. You can guarantee SM wouldn't have faced anything like it before. However, it wouldn't actually help you develop a team for tougher games.

People have no idea what he is like at inspiring the team. If you asked any player that played with him at boro they have nothing but positives for him. He was an inspirational captain and leader who was looked up to by great players of a similar age and young players. Sounds like good assets for any manager.

You might not see the best of kalvin phillips against san marino but against a good attacking team we will need someone with his assets so probably best to get him some games.

Connor Coady is a journeyman and then you suggest michael keane? Is he not a journeyman?

The reason Southgate was offered the Boro job was because of his influence towards the end of the 2006 season. At one point Boro were awful in the league and Southgate credited with galvanising the squad. I suspect not many people on this Forum would have the stature or personality to be able to do that.

There's no way he's lost that. The current England squad is full of young lads. I would bet they all look up to and listen to Southgate.
