Joy Division or New Order?

Which do you prefer?

I like Joy Division but love New Order so it’s the latter for me.
I think this is the best question ever asked on any on the FMTTM boards.

For me the answer's not simple, some days are a Joy Division type of day, others a New Order one. So the jury is out for me....

Having said that, if I had to pick one of the bands for a Master Mind topic, it would be Joy Division all day long 👍

Huge fan of both but New Order for me, although anything after Technique is a no-no.

Okay, Regret is a great song. Probably the last true "New Order" song, in fact.

And yes, Ceremony/In a Lonely Place is the definitive crossover point between Joy Division and New Order. If you know, you know.

Aaaaaaand finally, Movement is actually a really underrated album.

I bet no one on here knows the words to the hidden verse of the original demo of World In Motion, which served as the b-side to the 7 inch of the Italia 90 hit single. I do.

Love them both but enjoy the way you can rock or dance to the same New Order song. Are we having an FMTTM get together in Leeds on Oct 7th then? 😁. Always said I’d not go and see them without Hooky but I’ve succumbed.

I am lucky enough to see them both live. Different bands but I cant pick between them. So its a both from me.
Big regret is not going to see JD because I had an A level exam the next day. Can you remember much about the gig?
I've never tired of listening to them, even now at 59.
As a footnote I prefer the JD version of ceremony to the New Order one, especially the Still version.

Joy Division for me, but early New Order is also fabulous. Ceremony, EGG, BLT. (not the foods)
Always thought of EGG (and to an extent, Video 5 8 6) as precursors to Blue Monday.

Incidentally, is Blue Monday the worst New Order song? The band certainly dislike it enough. I used to love it but it's just so ubiquitous.

The 2 Stephen morris books are great! (Fast Forward and Record Play Pause)

Joy Division were raw and part of the DIY generation - it didn't matter if you could play or not.

When New Order were formed, Morris had embraced tech and the beat box - they were uncovering and pioneering new things in music.

Both great but Ian curtis was a great frontman where Barney was a reluctant one

No competition for me. Adore Joy Division but have always struggled with New Order despite trying hard to enjoy them.

Never been a fan of the "dancier" end of the spectrum from that time which probably impacts it but they lack the pure visceral anguish of Joy Division (i.e Ian Curtis)

Appreciate that Curtis was no angel either but Sumner and Hook get on my nerves too. Stephen Morris seems a good chap though.
