Jota

Keepers elbow hits Jota's instep as he goes past.

There are no two or three further steps before he goes down. That's nonsense.

He could probably have stayed on his feet mind and he makes sure he goes down once he feels the contact.

The fact there is contact pretty much means var can't over turn it.

How is it nonsense?

There are literally two steps after the gentle brushing before he decides to flop because he knows he's blown the chance.

There's no probably about it, the very minimal contact didn't impact him whatsoever, he just decided to cheat to win a penalty and was rewarded for it.

Following contact, Jota makes almost one single stride. The contact on his instep is from the elbow of the keeper. Keep watching. It's late as he goes past the keeper, almost as if he's completely past.

I am not for one second saying he didn't go down easy, or effectively dive, but there is contact and he doesn't then take loads of steps before he goes down.

I'm glad I'm not a ref.

One angle looks an awful dive. One he is clearly clipped on the foot and the next time that foot goes to ground he falls.

There was contact. The two angles almost look like a different incident. Players know now if there is contact VAR will be wading in.

Can't believe people are claiming it was a dive - It was a clear penalty. As soon as there's contact, Jota has every right to go down.
No he doesn't. You either get knocked off your feet or you don't. And players should always TRY to stay on their feet and not fall down.

What happened to hurdling over a defender's tackle? Now it seems obligatory to drag your trailing leg into the defender's shin.

His leg wasn’t taken away, it didn’t alter his stride, it didnt make him lose control of the ball he’d already done that himself and it didn’t make him fall over. He decided to throw himself to the ground which means it’s a dive. Was very similar to the one Luton got against us at the end of last season when Morrison dived.

We have some absolute whoppers on this board. Would you expect a penalty given if a defender brushed past an attacking player. No you wouldn’t, yet there would be more contact in that than this. Christ every freekick and corner had more contact than that, every one would be a penalty.

That was far worse and more blatant with alot less contact than Banguras dive the other day that he got pelters for, I know we have a fair few closet Liverpool fans but my god take those blinkers off.

I think it's different with a goalkeeper though. A goalkeeper has the 'privilege' of using both his hands and feet to make a challenge. Dubravka made a genuine attempt to play the ball but missed it completely and in doing so made contact with the forward. Soft yes but not comparable with a defender brushing past an attacking player.

Nonsense ,he took a dive as the angle got wider.
The thing is, if they are going to give fouls for this kind of minimal contact (that players are looking for) then surely it’s become a non contact sport and any contact is a foul everywhere on the pitch 🤷‍♂️

It’s ridiculous.
VAR should be assessing where players drag their leg behind them to ensure contact is made and their leg (like arms for handball) is in an unnatural position as contact is made; because so many players are doing this now…dragging one leg or pushing their leg into a defender and then going down…
Shameful behaviour really which needs serious action.

VAR has exacerbated diving now though, because they’ve decided contact equates to a foul and if there’s contact then they’ll give it. Players have been given a licence to cheat.

If I was a coach of a Premier League team now I’d be telling my players to go down on every corner, free-kick into the box, every time they got into the box and felt the merest contact.

It’s absolutely ludicrous what’s happened to top-level football. Loads of us said this sort of thing would happen but were assured we were wrong and that VAR was imperative. What we actually have is an absolute sh*t show that rewards players’ cheating.
