Josh Coburn

I don't understand why Josh Coburn was dropped from the team after scoring goals and then from the squad when Sporar is not delivering and we are struggling for goals. He has not been given a sniff since Wilder came in despite him making a point of calling his name out when he first joined. Yesterday was crying out for somebody like him to make an impact but he wasn't even on the bench.
He's ill

The lad does need to be playing senior football but the speed with which people make judgements is quite mad. He came on against Sheffield Wednesday last season and changed the game. He’s scored 3 goals with the seniors but because he was ineffective against Millwall we should send him straight out on loan? We’ve got a load of players to move on ahead of Coburn. He should be in the 18 ahead of Ikpeazu IMO.

Loaning out isn't moving on.
He's 19, playing consistently at a lower level is better for his development than occasionally coming off the bench for us.

We need a new striker in January, and Wilder has already hinted he'll be trying to get one, and if we do bring one in then the chance of Coburn coming off the bench is even lower.

Don't think I've seen many of our young players be given the support of some on here. Gibbo was another one who was written off after a few performances.

I'd keep him in and around the first team. I'm not sure where you can send him on loan where they play the type of possession based football wilder is trying to implement here, so I don't see how a loan would get him closer to our first team.

He's already shown he can get goals at this level so I don't see the point in shipping him out to a league 2 team struggling for form and goals. Have him on our bench and play him in the cup games.

I would prefer to see him learn the game under Wilder here than go out on loan, he's got a natural instinct as a finisher, probably just needs to work on his all round game to fit into our 'new' approach. It's amazing how quickly players get written off and/or lauded by some. He's got potential, but isn't ready to start on a regular basis yet.

We currently don't have a better option off the bench than Coburn when it comes to strikers. I think Ikpeazu's initial burst has fizzled out and it's clear he isn't good enough to play in a side chasing promotion. He will go down as yet another waste of money. Coburn would most likely benefit from a loan spell but not necessarily; some players come through and don't go out on loan. I think he needs to hit the gym and continue doing what he's been doing because to my mind he looks sharp. Just because he was ineffective against Millwall, it doesn't cancel out the good stuff he's done since coming through into the senior side.

He's got a good knack of finding space in the box and finishing chances off. I'd love to see his stats for shots/efforts to goals because he seems very clinical to me. I don't see why we'd loan that type of player out when we don't have many, if any, of them at the club. There was a clamour to get Wood out on loan but look what happened there. You have to do a lot of work to make sure they're going to the right club, where they will play every week. A lot of our lads seem to go out and sit on the bench or be in and out of sides. He might as well do that at Boro as do it with Oxford or Swindon Town. If you're moving him out on loan to develop him as a person, to have him living away from home and doing stuff for himself, etc, then that's a slightly different thing but regarding the football I don't think it's a given that he should go out TBH.

If rumours of two strikers are right then Sporar, Watmore + 2 (Balogun and Gayle) would be more than enough. Coburn wouldn't get ahead of those, so get him into LEague One/Two and getting game time

There is no disagreement there really. The issue for me is the clamour to get a lad out on loan when he's a good option for us. We don't have four strikers as it stands. Until we do then Coburn is second choice behind Sporar IMO. And Ikpeazu should be moved out before Coburn anyway.

I wouldn't get him out until 2 come in. If we don't get 2 in, he stays and is involved.

We’re on the same page! Not sure about Dwight Gayle but Balogun is incredibly highly rated. I’d love to think he could be a Bamford-type loan for us and knock 10 goals in before the season is out.

I’m afraid my view on that is that he’s actually not all that good. He might be in time but his last performance was very, very poor. He is nowhere near as good as Sporar, goal record notwithstanding. He doesn’t deserve to be first choice.
I agree Sporar is first choice but Coburn deserves to be in the 18 ahead of Ikpeazu. Namely because he has a record of coming off the bench and nicking a goal.

And people wonder why we've never produced a striker of note since the 70s. Writing Coburn off when his record of starts-goals speaks for itself.

Yeah, 2 goals in 2 starts is an excellent return.
His 2 goals in 9 appearances off the bench is nothing to be sniffed at either.

But given just how young he is, and the fact I don't think his overall performances have been that impressive so far, I would sooner he was playing regularly right now.

I expect Ikpeazu is getting moved on in January, and we'll be bringing in strikers in January.
Obviously there's no point in loaning him out if we don't bring in a striker, but I think it makes perfect sense if we do.

Yes, Dwight is a championship beast in terms of goal output, but not sure if he thinks he is bigger than us, and his loan fee would be huge. Not sure why the skunks gave him a contract extension to 2024 and then never play him. 59 goals and 16 assists in 83 starts and 17 sub appearances at this level. Nearly a goal/assist a game

It is not just Josh's goals, it is the positions he took up and the coolness of very different finishes.
That sort of instinct and positioning is rare and we should nurture it accordingly.

He appears to be easily the best finisher at the club.

I'd love to think it too. For every Bamford there is a Nmecha or Nimely. Also Bamford had previously done it in the Championship, for Derby. I wouldn't be in favour of signing Balogun when we have Coburn of our own, but if we could get a scorer who has done it in the Championship, then by all means.

Balogun is more suited to Wilders style right now, and he is also England U21 number 9 and top U23 scorer. He's ahead of Coburn by some distance right now.
