Jonathan Woodgate - defending coach..

Not terrible at all. He’s done much better as a manager under funded from a standing start than many of his Championship contemporaries.

No credit for our victories or player development.. but somehow all the criticism?

Our defence is shocking , why on earth wouldn’t your ask questions about a former international defender who coach’s them ?

Because he's probably a better defender right now than they'll ever be .

Weirdly.. the same level of mud wasn't thrown at Carrick , a centre Mid ... Watching the likes of 107 year old Barry Bannon dominate the middle of the park .

Why can't he make coach McCabe and Barlaser into him and Roy Keane ? ... He's had two years to do it ?

Even Klopp and prime Pep can't make Ayling have a turn of pace at 34 .
And they aren't changing Burgzorg/ Doak / Illing / Azaz / Whittaker into anything other than they are

The squad is completely front loaded , for non defensively minded players .. in terms of investment, talent and emphasis..

I'm not btw supporting Woodgate or Carrick in this , ... The rinse and repeat 4 2 3 1 at all times falls on them with what they have available.

But defensively .... It's not JUST on Woodgate , cos he was a really good centre half

Hmmm, Woodie was a top defender in his day...now coach here...knows all back line ins and outs..

Don't see an issue with bringing his name into the mix as one of (but not the only) issue that might be wrong....

Or is he protected as he is from the town?

Good post, we don’t defend as a team which leaves us exposed at times

Then there’s the mistakes at the back, that isn’t defending, that is playing through transition which falls to the manager’s tactics and phi

Let's be honest it was two howlers from individuals and Ayling being taught a lesson by a phenomenal player in Le Fee.
What coaching is going to stop that.

Actually I came on the board to make this point.
Any other team doubles up on a "phenomenal player in Le Fee" .

What was Carrick's plan to defend such a talented player. Leave a 34 year old full back 1v1 against him?

At half time when it was apparent that Ayling was miles out of his depth, how did he change it? He didn't. He left him.1v1.

Whittaker and Illing Junior didn't play deeper to help double up on him.
Morris didn't come across and double up on him.
We just let Ayling sink. He had a very poor game but he needed help.

No adaptability from the touchline. No defensive plan to stop our opponents. Just send the lads out there and play the way we always do and hopefully it works. Not good enough
